A human life.

What value would you put to a life?

We each value our own skin of course, and that of our offspring.

But has anyone noticed how cheap we come these days?

Here in Britain, someone who murders can get out in as quick as 12 or less years.

Insurance companies average a human life at about £10,000-25,000 or thereabouts.

People are murdered so frequently that it doesnt raise an eyebrow anymore.

Governments send in armies to war with a certain death toll already calculated in.

Guess I'm pondering the state of the modern psyche. Why isnt a single human life held to be what it is anymore? Priceless.

I think it goes even deeper than that.

Todays society is a 'i want it now' kind of place. A place where lives are stolen for mere pennies. Drive by shootings for just the fun of it. Perverts burying the evidence so they wont get caught. Where did our sense of rightousness and value go?

The ancients sacrificed people to appease the gods. We sacrifice to appease our immediate whim. Where did it all go wrong? Why are we so hedonisitic?

I don't think this is anything new Raven....go back in history and look at the torture, murder and the general hatefulness of the human race since time began.

Because of the media, we hear about these things much more now and there is so much of it, that we just accept it....it has no shock value any more and we peaceful citizens who wouldn't hurt anyone are kinda divorced from it until somone we know or love is involved.

The world doesn't seem to learn from past mistakes that's for sure.

One thing is certain....too much PC and too much leniency for those who commit crime.

Agreed. And causing death by driving seems to evoke even lower sentences than for any other kind of murder!

But despite this I think life in the westernised world is still held to be sacred. In the middle east and in Africa, millions are killed daily, in many ways ..... and no-one pays the price! :(

...although they can be hauled back at any time to complete their sentences.

They are "freed on parole".

I sincerely hope not. I have enough life insurance to meet my liabilities, which

are rather more than that figure! Are you thinking of criminal injuries

compensation, or something?

When things happen often, the population do become inured...

That has ever been the case, hasn't it?

I think it's a disjunction between those "in power" and the general population.

String 'em up! The population at large are far more in favour of this than our

representatives seem to be.

I think it's that we are just so desensitized. We are inundated with horror on a daily basis, it's in the news, it's in the work place, it's even in our entertainment. Now we have shows like CSI (now i love that show) that give you detailed accounts of all the ways a person can die! I remember my mother covering my eyes when we went to see Raiders of the Lost Ark, you know the scene where they open the ark and every body melts. That is kid stuff these days. :(

While I share your sentiments in the main, I can't agree with this. Causing

death by driving, be it dangerous, without due care and atterntion, reckless

or drunk, isn't murder - that's not to say that the penalties are always

appropriate though.

Perhaps not millions, but in these places, the difference in perception really is

quite extraordinary. BTDTGTTS.
