Sundays was always a Roast Dinner
Mondays was always left over roast meat and chips.
Tuesdays was Beef Stew and Dumplings, followed by home made Rice Pudding.
Wednesdays would be Cottage Pie.
Thursdays would sometimes be home made Pasties, or Pasty Pie.
Friday would be whatever was left, called iffits (if its there you can have it!)
Saturdays were generally fend for yourself days.
Sometimes we'd have Bangers beans and mash, or beef pie thrown in for a change, but it was always Meat and three veg!
I think Mum stuck to this routine as she worked, I guess it was easier for her but boring as hell!
Until I left home I had never tried Pizza, Pasta or even Rice as a savoury, Mum has never eaten either and she won't even try them now!
This is very similar to the cuisine that I knew growing up, the only difference being that every Saturday was Chippy night. I still have a taste for these things now, I'm not a fan of 'foods of the world'. my wife makes a mean cottage pie, that's my favourite, she makes loads and freezes it. I generally will eat this every night for 3or 4 days, I never get bored of it.

I grew up with my Grandparents...............lots of lamb and beef. Vegies were scarce. There was dessert though. My Papoo died from too much fat in his diet.........my Memoo was diabetic.. I only make the food my Memoo taught me when I want to remember the love around the kitchen table.

Ooooohhh....grits.....:yh_drool My grandpa would make grits, or cornmeal mash for breakfast most mornings during the summers I spent with them, and Sunday mornings were always, without fail made-from-scratch pancakes and maple syrup. (Yep, the maple syrup was homemade, too!!)

I can still remember the folks going to buy one...the shop assistant called me a 'precocious child' because I somehow managed to set the store alarm off - no idea how! I must have been about 6 or 7, I think.
Oh, born in '75.

My mum is vegetarian, so i remember vegetarian spaghetti bolognese, chilli-non-carne, home made pizzas and my mums lovely vegetable soup.
I used to go for dinner at my nanas quite often too, who is maltese, and used to make me all these maltese baked rice dishes and baked macaroni, and yesterdays leftovers would always be fried with an egg and served again smiley-smile yummy!
When i used to visit my dad and my nana in scotland, I used to love Stovies and mince and tatties, and my nanas vegetable soup made with loads of grated carrots. Delicious. Also porridge made with salt and sugar. Yum!!

My mom worked.. and was the "master" of the crock pot!! My Dad was a truck driver who delivered groceries to stores so that normal people could buy and eat food at regular times of the day... so growing up.. I ate alot of very tender slow cooked meat, and overcooked vegatables.
Now.. don't get me wrong.. I loved mom's crock pot dinners!! Comfort food!! They all tasted the same, and it was always good.. On Sundays Mom would make something special.. usually something she read about in Home & Garden magazine... Sundays usually sucked!!! My Dad would not cook!! He is/was one of those men who just could not cook for himself. Delivering groceries meant that he worked at night.. so when he got home, Mom was gone, and for years he would just sit at the buddy bar in our house and complain about how hungry he was.. that's why I learned to cook... Hey man.. he paid all my bills.. the least I could do was cook his breakfast! I enjoyed doing it!! I may not have been the basketball player that he wanted me to be.. but NOBODY makes better hash browns than I do!! and I know the difference between over easy, and sunnyside up eggs!!
My Mom was not really a very good cook.. but we all ate, and ate good (I have three sisters) My sisters did most of the clean-up.. but none of them ever had to mow the lawn.. so I guess that was a fair trade.. And none of my sisters ever made breakfast or lunch for my Dad.. that was my job I guess.. I don't know why that was exactly.. just an unwritten rule at Captain Ray's house...
Now that I am an adult.. I do most of the cooking. Lilly is not a very good cook.. and takes very much offense when I tell her so... It's easier to just make the food myself...
I am rambling.... on to the next thread..

I loved the Swanson fried chicken TV dinners!! And Mom used to make us the hot dogs rolled n crescent rolls. I recently made that for my daughter & she liked them. She makes the vienna sausages in cut-up crescent rolls.
My mom had meats that went with certain sides & sides that went with certain meats. When my ex-husband tried to vary, when he cooked, I actually threw fits! I know.. childish.

Bleh! We had salmon patties too. Also potato pancakes. We always had meat and potatoes and vegetables almost daily and lots of cream sauces on our vegetables. Mom specialized in cream soups too. I'm surprised my arteries aren't permanently plugged! We always ate a lot of beef and it was always well done. The term hockey pucks comes to mind for hamburgers and steaks...but that is the way Dad liked them!

My mom made macaroni salad every summer. Had this one big bowl she always put it in. I have that bowl now..it became so identified with mom and her mac salad, that a few years back I had my cousin and her husband over for a picnic, and I made mac salad, and put it in the bowl. As soon as my cousin saw the bowl, before even seeing the contents she laughed and said "Macaroni salad, right?":wah:

My mom is Italian and my dad is Polish but we didn't eat a lot of either type of foods. We had spaghetti one night a week and kielbasa one night a week. Other than that it was just plain old American fare.
We did have a traditional Polish Christmas Eve meal and a Polish Easter meal (still do).

At home we ate all the regular stuff. But every year my brothers and me went to stay at my grandparents house. He was a Babtist hell fire and brimstone preacher and my grandma was american Indian. Well in a word we ate SPAM about 90% of the time we were there it seems. Now you can think Bubba in Forest gump here. We had spam and eggs, fried spam, fried spam sandwiches, open face spam sandwiches, spam and onions, ground spam stuffed peppers, you name it we ate it. And if you once complained it was bed immediatley after you did the dishes. If we were ever caught in the ice box after supper we were grounded for the next day. We could have half a hershey bar and half a coke between supper and bedtime. I used to go home and tell my parents that grandma and grampa were trying to starve us to death. But I do have to admit still eating spam occassionally to this day.

My mother learned to cook southern food, because my dad is from the south. I remember fried chicken, blackeyed peas, mashed potatoes (mmmmmm), corn bread, and iced tea that was really sweet. I can also remember lot of noodles and also this dish she called............. "s h i t on the shingle". It was chipped beef on a piece of toast with some kind of gravy over it.
My grandparents would make me things like peaches and cottage cheese and chocolate milk.

Growing up I often ate Italian food on one weekend then Polish food the next. So I ate ravioli one weekend and perogis next week. Sure it seemed a little confusing at the time but I got used to it. Though I have had some good Polish food through the years, I prefer Italian food and cook it when I have the mood. My favorite food to cook is pizza and I make the dough, oven dry the tomatoes, etc..
