the Witch of Endor
the Witch of Endor
There is a very interesting story in the bible that concerns a certain witch that King Saul went to consult, before his battle with the Philistines. What I find so interesting, is that the witch was SUCCESSFUL in calling up the spirit of Samuel, the prophet. According to the scriptures, it really was his spirit! And he condemned Saul for doing it. What this tells me is, that there truly are people who are mediums. It gives credence to the art of magic. Astrology as well. The three wise men discerned from the star of Bethlehem, that a new king was to be born in Israel. And the priests of egypt were able to duplicate some of the ten plaques. So what has happened to all this knowledge?

Some would say it is alive and well. I think only fragments of the knowledge exist in most people who consider themselves adept. And a little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing. Especially if they dare to believe that they know "it all".

I can agree with Raven on one thing. They are interesting stories.

Webster’s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary: “an account of incidents or events†or “ A statement regarding the facts pertinent to a situation in question†….can also be a fictional narrative shorter than a novel.
It's good to see that you’ve seen the light Ted.

LOL! Ted, I believe what makes them interesting, is the fact that I believe they actually occured!
Unlike Moby Dick or Oliver Twist. (of which I have read both)

It is an interesting "story" unfortunately not historical just as the previous story present by Raven is pure "story". It has truths to tell but it is in itself nothing more then a story.

The witch conjured the likeness of Samuel, and we know that the devil can change his appearance (note in the garden he was a serpent), and a likeness of Samuel does not the real thing make.
Will you read the whole story and get back to me? Thank you.
Ooops. Guess I'll lose my kingdom. What a damn shame that'll be. LOL.

Oh for petes sake! I HAVE read the story! It's I Samuel 28:7! In MY bible there is NO doubt as to whom the woman called up! I think you need to read it again.
Yes I'm TOTALLY aware of the consequences and SO WAS SAUL! Yes I'm aware of what is forbidden! I'm not in the habit of consulting seers or wizards. My whole point was to discuss an ancient Babylonian religion that seems to have had some real substance to it. So you can climb off that 'high' horse and quit pointing a finger at me. I'm trying to have a conversation thats thought provoking and informative. I'm discussing true occurances and not some 'slight of hand tricks' by the charlatans of today. These people did some amazing things. I'm sorry that you cant appreciate it.

That you think that I think the Bible is pure fiction is simply a misunderstanding on your part. I likened it to "Oliver Twist" in order to show that while Dickens' book is a novel, pure fiction it presents much truth about life in his era. That is hardly the same thing as saying the Bible is a novel like any pocket novel by Koontz or someone else.
In the sacred scriptures myth, legend, poetry, short story, fiction etc all have a specific purpose. They can all present profound truths and in many cases better then historical writings. The whole nature of Haggadah Midrash is a very precise way of presenting spiritual truths. I guess until you really give some thought to what I am saying you will never really understand. For me it has been the greatest boost to the Bible that ever happened.
That you would suggest that I think the Bible is cheap fiction is simply an error. You are wrong.

I was just taking a good natured poke! It's just my sense of humor....... :-6
I do understand how you come to your conclusions, but try and understand how others come to theirs....please? There are quite a few folks here that understand the method of midrashic presentation, myself included. But as far as scripture is concerned, the bible itself tells you what it is. If it's poetry, it tells you. If it's parable, it tells you. If the meaning is clear, precise and TRUE , it usually begins with a verily, verily. Please understand that I hold the highest regard for you. I just simply cant agree with you, most of the time. :-6

I do understand. I've been there and done that.
Not a problem. I too enjoy a good debate and like it the way it is here. It drives me to my books and my theological friends thus increasing my own fund of knowledge. I've just signed up to take a summer course at the Vancouver School of Theology. I'm hoping to spend a week with Dr. Matthew Fox a well known scholar and theologian. I spent some time last summer with Dr. Marcus Borg.
I think you are wrong about one point: haggadah midrash. It does not announce itself that is the very nature of the writing.
Actually I have no problem with those who wish to follow the more traditional paradigm. All I ask is that they recognize that there are others equally sincere and Christian who accept the emerging paradigm.
Nevertheless lets carry on. I wouldn't want my reputation ruined. LOL.
