RPG recommendations? (SNES)

Hey everyone. I was a very late bloomer when it comes to video games, since I played my first epic one only 3 years ago. The ones that I thought were incredible were Chrono Trigger and FF3/6, and everything I tried afterwards just didn't seem to measure up.

Could anyone recommend a similar game? I'm fond of that particular battle arrangement, and what I'm looking for is a solid plot and interesting characters (not shooting monsters). I'd also prefer an older game, since 3-D ones give me headaches. Thanks so much.
