Can anyone figure out this brain teaser?

I am stumped. I can usually figure out the brain teasers I find to put here, but this one has me totally stumped. I cannot figure it out at all. I am putting it here to see if anyone else can figure it out and tell me. I am giving the answer, I just do not get it.

If E times ILE equals BANISH, and TE times T equals BOOK, what does TO times IN equal?

A. BREATH

B. TEASER

C. RUTABAGA

D. POISON

E. COPPER

Hint

No math is needed.

Answer

POISON

Replace every instance of the word "times" with an 'X'.

Sheesh and here was me thinking that I was good at riddles and brain teasers but this is a toughy alright. This line just doesn't seem to make any sense at all:
