N.D.O.C is denying essentials

Post by ejadanielle »

The Wiccans, Druids, and Asatrus who are incarcerated within the Nevada Department of Corrections are being denied essential items for the practice of these faiths and are suffering other violations of the First Amendment and the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000. Federal injunctive relief is necessary to correct these violations, and skilled legal representation is necessary for potential class-action litigation. WE NEED YOUR HELP! If you can provide us with, or help us obtain, legal representation, please contact at least one of the following individuals by mail:

For the Wiccans: John Cuzdey #23044

For the Druids: Steven Clark #54280

For the Asatrus: Ryan Coddington #49378

They don't need special items. Their god(s) will hear them whether they have an athame or a bible or whatever they use, or not. It is after all, prison.

You are kidding, right?

I find it hard to feel sorry for the violation of a prisoners "constitutional rights". I mean, really - didn't they violate someone else's? As far as I am concerned, you are darn lucky you get three squares and a cot.

Laugh if you must people. But if these inmates weren't allowed Christian bibles and other such items the howl would be deafening.

Well, you wouldn't hear me howling. Personally, I don't think they should have anything besides 4 walls, a cot and a toilet.

Some prisons don't allow Bibles or any other objects that inmates can hide contraband and weapons in. Paramount should be the safety of the corrections officers and not the sensibilities of the inmates.

What items are they being denied? That would help in determining whether NDOC is being reasonable or not.

here's the thing, and it's pretty widely misunderstood. in fact, i think it's just another example of the addled teaching that goes on in our public schools.

Rights are not absolute. Rights carry responsibilities.

The rights that are codified in the Constitution and Bill of Rights confer upon adults, of sound mind, who are not criminals/felons. It should be common sense, but i guess a heck of a lot of people don't understand that. Think about it. the very fact that someone is locked up would be a violation of their rights! except that they relinquished their right to freedom by committing crimes. That's how it works. Convicts in prison can't vote either - oh my god!!! they can't own guns either - holy moly!

The mentally ill also lose rights routinely, as well some should. And children also fall into a special area of protection, extraconstitutionally, because those who are incapable of making decisions legally for themselves - who cannot give informed consent or dissent - must be handled on a different level. Children can't own guns. children don't have a right to free expression - at least not as permissive as adults have.

the "practice" of religion is an artful dodge. faith comes from within the heart, not from the altar. the convicts are absolutely free to worship. they just can't have a goat handy for sacrifice.

i kind of wonder what would happen if some bright person created a new religion whose tenets forbade incarceration. or that required all its members always have a handgun on their person. I wonder what the ACLU would do then?
