I've always thought it was unfair the way men & women can be viewed in such a superficial way on their appearance.
For instance, i recently saw a guy of at least 70 sporting a drop earring in each ear & what remained of his hair tied back in a ponytail.
But when a lady of a certain age dresses beyond her years she is said to be mutton dressed as lamb!
I wonder do any of the gardeners have a phrase to describe the male equivalent? may i start the ball rolling with "sausagemeat dressed as prime beef"....

How come it's always food analogies? My favorite is "Dog food trying to pass itself off as pate." Why IS it that we age and men get "distinguished"??? :-5

Hmm? Ageism is not supposed to be happening. I guess even older women can still break out the claws. Men become distinguished because their mothers told them that they are. It is all the clothing. They aren't in a modelling contest so they don't have to make the mistake of wearing something that is new or offbeat.
Once women get past the childbearing years they are considered of no use to themselves or anybody else because there is no sexual activity. They are only beginning to realize what a bunch of tripe that is but the stereotypes are still there. It depends on the personality more than anything. That glow in the face does a lot to make the person be what they are. Happy being alive and well.

Don't hide after that one Kensloft, that is so true, we are finally realizing we are more than just child bearing vessels. And we reach our sexual peak later in years and should be proud of who we are and carry ourselves so. Ype personality, and sense of self worth are key in how to carry on

There's the other side of this coin in this thread too....
Young boys are expected to stifle all their emotions. Crying is forbidden. You must learn to be violent or you will be bullied on the playground. You must not take too much care in grooming or fashion or you will be labeled a homosexual. You have to learn to "talk tough" You cannot express any complaints about pain. Real men do not feel pain...
and the list goes on. All of these expectations are just as slanted and unreasonable as the expectations of women.

abbey you're right it is unfair, there has always been a double standard!
But most women regardless of their age, will have a good woman friend that will tell her when her appearance is inappropriate. And not right for her age.
Most likely the 70+ year old man was not married, and that was his way of showing/advertising that fact. Because if he were married, his wife would certainly not have let him make a jackas$ out of himself! As "she" would not want to be seen with the idiot! Unfortunately, most senior male friends will not tell a guy, (Unless they are the queer eye guys) that he is inappropriately dressed, including telling him to loose the ponytail! (As they probably don't even know it is inappropriate themselves) :guitarist (He could be called: "BeefLess-Cake")

The ideas put forth in the original post are as real a depiction of life as Leave it to Beaver was in the 50"s and 60's. There is a grain of truth but the statements are just not completely true.
Yes, boys have to learn to deal with bullies but so do little girls.
If you have children do you teach the boys to not express their emotions? Then why assume it is done by everyone else?
Dressing? since when do children not want to dress like their peers reguardless of what that looks like?
And since when do kids not get teased if they are different and say for instance don't dress like others?
Not saying this is right but it is not gender specific.
Jive's post was just to stereotypical a view point to be correct.
My opinion, don't expect all to share it.

Many boys are expected to become bullies. Just try acting weak or emotional on a 5th grade playground. See what happens.
If you have children do you teach the boys to not express their emotions?
Regardless of what yo teach them, the world, and specifically their peers, will teach them an entirely different lesson the second they reach school. I should know, I see it every single day on the playground.
Do you honestly believe that a little boy that cries and is easily hurt emotionally won't be harrassed and teased by the other children....maybe in a dream world, but not in reality.
Dressing? since when do children not want to dress like their peers reguardless of what that looks like?
They don't have a choice. Dress like your group or be an outcast, that's the rules of the playground and the high school yard. Especially don't dress up or be too clean if you are a boy. At the least you be called "schoolboy" and "teacher's pet", at worst you'll invite calls of "fag" and "gay" and "wussy" immediately. An unfrotunately... even worse behavior.
And since when do kids not get teased if they are different and say for instance don't dress like others?
Ummm...I said that you had to dress tough to be a guy, you are agreeing with me.
Jives' post was stereotypical

Become Bullies? If you don't teach your kids to act that way why assume others do? Do you really expect me to beleive that parents want the kids to abuse others? of course it happens but your talking about parents teaching it.Regardless of what yo teach them, the world, and specifically their peers, will teach them an entirely different lesson the second they reach school. Once women get past the childbearing years they are considered of no use to themselves or anybody else because there is no sexual activity. They are only beginning to realize what a bunch of tripe that is but the stereotypes are still there. It depends on the personality more than anything. I don't know where you go to school or what country you live in because you are acting holier and smarter than thou. I've seen what Jive talks about with my own eyes. If anything he is being nice about it.
You don't want to take the experience of others because you think that the world is like you describe it. It isn't! Maybe in some cloistered environment it is, but not out there on the streets, schoolyards or parks!
If anything is strereotypical it is your usage of the term gender specific. Trying to tie it up in a nice little bundle just to show that if there is a problem it is the other guys fault. I take it there are no gays or lesbaens that live in your country. Must be nice.
I thought that we were dicussing thoughts that occur with women. Good thing you are around to tell them what to think. Heaven forbid they should get pig headed and start spouting their own views.

What? it has to be the way you see it.

For my two cents. Frankly, I think Jive's comments sound biographical, I think that Jahamaa made a very good point, Ken, couple more beers and you'll chill out Shees and one of you gals said we looked distinguished??????????
OK ladies, from my perspective the idea of older women automatically becoming unattractive because of age is just plain BS.
If the only thing you had going for you was your looks and/or body, then both you, the shallow idiot that married you, and your vanities, deserve the hell of obsolesence.
I happen to love women, and hate stupidity. two old sayings are far overstated but have a bit of truth. " marry an ugly women, she'll be greatful", "cookin last's, kissin don't" no no no, hold the brickbats please
Guys day dream a lot, I once tried to imagine being married to a playboy model. ----the honey moon was fantastic, breakfast the next morning..cold cereal, spent the rest of the day watching this "beauty", put on her ah beauty, spent part of the night watching her charm everybody else, spent the rest of the night with the dog, cause Ms. bueatiful was tired out -- and I had a good imagination.
In real life, I married the most beautiful gal in the world, we grew up and old together, we joke about our wrinkles, pouches, lines, sags etc, guess our sight is going too, cause we still light up when the other comes into the room -we've made history together.
Sometimes when we feel like a good yuk, we play a game where I choose her a young stud, and she chooses me a young actress, then we take turns, she describing me, and me describing her with our new playmates. The game usually gets pretty ribald and intimate. We generally end up ROTFL, the conclusion always the same, maybe a one nighter, but never ever more.
my point in all this drivil? LADIES: if ya still wanna be home coming Queen, grow-up; If it's a man your wanting, doya really want one obsessed with psysical beauty, can ya really tolerate that kinda value system?
And do ya really think that doofus with the rug, girdle, sports car, and young blonde really looks dignified?????
My advice, stick your chest out, your head out, and let rip a chorus of "I am woman, hear me roar' ARCHER GIRL IS RIGHT, Women today are beginning to view the change of life as a new opportunity physically, emotionally, sexually, and spiritually since they no longer are bound by concerns about pregnancy and menstruation..... The world isn't as I describe. Why just because you say so.
What? it has to be the way you see it.
Jives put up a post saying people expected people to act a certain way. I'm not saying they don't act that way only that it is not the way others want them to behave.
And I didn't tell anyone how to think He gives his veiws I give mine. It is called discussion.
If you don't like discussion I'm sure you can start your own thread and title it HOOray for My Side.
If you don't recognize the problem then there is no problem. If there is no problem then there isn't a need for a solution.
As a matter of fact a friend of mine sang on an album that used those words of saying Hooray for our side. It was a big hit and some people even called it a National anthem of the times.
In your world the guarantor of safety is the "Father Knows Best" icon giving the world his reasons for keeping it safe and open. Discussion is where you dissect each others ideas. Not just throw them onto the thread and say that is it.
Giving views is not a discussion. It is a cop out.

AND WE AH ER MATURE COOTS LOVE YOU FOR IT

Ahem! Ahem! If you would go to post 4 on this thread you might find that I said exactly that and that archer girl was repeating what I had stated. Not that I want the kudos but it is nice just to keep track of things. People taking things and making things out of context is easy to do so I have to remind you that I am answering specific challenges. Jives has a lot more going for him than some autobiography of his life. I've seen these communities all over this continent in cities big or small. It is part of the CanadiAmerican growing up syndrome.
As for the beers we'll drop over to the pub later and let the more pulchritudinous of the human race buy us a few if they like what we say otherwise we're on our own. I don't want to simmer down too much 'cause I saw that Jives just barely made it to school. Hope he was smart enough to take off his shirt when he got home so that his wife would think that he is getting dressed for work. I would've told him to do it but he was gone beforre I could open my mouth to let him in on the secret to being out late and getting away with it.

women, looks, brains and sex appeal...it's a package. and of course all of us have our own subjective ideals. personally, i am "middle-aged" and was feeling crummy about it because i was a drop-dead amazonian knockout when younger. but thankfully i had been conditioned to put much more value on brains. if we have good genes that's great, i do not look my age at all, but i still hated the "number". i found out that what we do has much to do with it, my job requires me to be in shape, strong, and have attitude. it keeps me "young". my grandmother was an "old lady" at my age, where i am kicking butt... unthinkable, even when my mom was my current age. confidence is 98% of that, how you carry yourself. i think if i had to hang up my gunbelt i could get old fast! but anyway, because of the American obsession with 20-year-olds and the SI swimsuit issue, i was feeling over the hill. i work with mostly men, i got some satisfaction from being found attractive, but it was more important to me to be considered an equal who is capable and willing to back up my partners. in fact i was very gratified when my squad called me the best shot a few years ago, and a "scrapper". high praise indeed. but i reached a moment when i decided no more love life and that was it, i was a grandmother now. :-1 BUT! ...i met a fantastic man 11 years my junior who finds me sexy and smart and funny and loves me and loves my life-experience. so i am in bloom and in love and feel 25 again! amazing! it took me some time to accept that i wasn't done and over the proverbial hill. what is different about this is that i know it's not youth and beauty that he loves, it is the real person. i am probably way off-topic, but der wulf inspired my thoughts. i hope this may inspire other women to realize their intrinsic worth is not contingent on a shallow ideal that nobody can sustain forever. :yh_flower
