when I grow up....

Post by Raven »

At 42, I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do! I have done the medicine thing. But I'm also an artist. I would love to be able to make a living doing just that! Why not? Michaelangelo did!

But then there is this little niggling love of archaeology..... I've been digging in the dirt since I was a kid, to collect arrowheads and cool rocks. (like geodes) Now that I'm in a new place, that doesnt have my job classification, I'm facing something of a dilemma. Even though I'm getting a job with the NHS (national 'elf sevice) I've been contemplating a serious career change.

Would you?

never too late to find your passion in life.

Heck I'm 52 and still don't know what I want to be when I grow up, If I ever do grow up, I've been fighting against it a long time.

But if I ever figure it out I'll do it no matter my age or position in life at the time.

I'd be hard pushed to decide what would be a 'better' career for her, nursing or archeaology.

Nursing is an honourable career but so badly paid in the uk its a real crime.

Not sure what diggers get paid, but I guess like nursing its more about the job satisfaction.

Career change oh hun, at 43 I took a sharp left and veered off in one direction and bleck hated it so ventured into something else and am loving it. From Oil and gas licences to electronics.

Always grow

grow all ways.

Go for what you love hun

I'm a 'time team' addict! But it's like I've come to an intermission! A 'self-reassessment'! LOL! Any of my choices means more schooling. Gotta get those UK qualifications, 'cuz the US ones wont do.

I know exactly where you are coming from. At age 36 I decided to go to uni to do a degree in Psychology. Now that my kids are getting older, 13 and 16, I decided they didn't need me to hold their hands any more and it was time to do something just for me. So here I am, back in full time education and wondering what I want to do with the rest of my life! Im torn between speech therapy and psychology. I don't regret my decision for a minute though, I have met so many great people and being with lots of younger students has given me a new outlook on life.

Did you move from the US to the UK, Raven? What do you think of life this side of the Atlantic?

:)
Yep! I'm a trans-atlantic transplant. I've been here for almost two years now. It's funny, but I never did feel like I was in a foreign country. Probably because the main language is english. It's not a whole lot different than the US. Just smaller. LOL!! I keep teasing my husband, saying it's like living in a theme park! :yh_laugh And all the rides are at Alton Towers! And being the history buff that I am, you have to know I'm in 7th heaven!

I'm 32, and work 9-5. It pays the bills, and every day is different, but I don't feel challenged anymore, let alone fulfilled.

Not sure if I need a serious career change or just a fulfilling hobby .
I did have the kind of job I loved. I was a respiratory therapist in the states. I cant do that anymore. They dont have that job description in Britain. :-1

So.....I'm faced with a cross-roads. Which way do I go? Kinda like Gandalf, in Moria. I just have to follow my nose! :driving:

At 62, I'll let you know what I want to do when I grow up. (Ha-Ha)

It's never too late to follow your heart's desire, you owe it to yourself to be happy! No one else can do it for you. I had "13" jobs (13 turned out to be a lucky # for me) before I found the right job that fit me! Keep on looking till you find yours! :wah:

The one thing I do know.....my life has been one heck of an adventure! I've gotten to explore and work all over the GREAT country of my birth, and now I find myself at the seat of my country origin. How cool is that? But I'm not getting any younger! LOL!

This is the first and only career I've had. I did the housewife thing for years, and now I'm in college. I'll graduate with my first degree at age 41.

My job sounds incredibly boring. But I find it fascinating, challenging, and rewarding. (I'm an accountant for an insurance company.) When I learn all of this stuff, I'll move on, or up, or both. LOL! The biggest thing to me is to be able to use various skills (or moods, depending on how you call it) and to be constantly challenged. My mind requires "food" - it's a fault, I know. (wry grin)

So, for you I'd say that you need to find whatever it is inside you that makes a job wonderful. What are your basic needs?

Then I'd go and talk with people working in the fields you're drawn to. See what they have to say about it, and think hard on how that fits you.

And then, once I've chosen a path, I'd follow it with all my heart. If it turns out to be something different later on, that's ok. If you've enjoyed the time and feel a sense of accomplishment, what else matters? :)

When I grow up I am going to be an astronaut. If not a news anchor. If not a geologist. If not a billionaire. If not an explorer. If not a General. If I ever grow up I might try for one of these postions... if not I'll be satisfied with being happy.

You don't want to help us cut, split and load cordwood, we are looking for helpers. The pay is a cord of wood. Yes we have gloves.

slushpuppy wrote: Yeah, me too! Actually I'll be 40 but lets not quibble over a year here or there. Isn't it great? I think my kids are really proud of me for what I'm doing and I'm pretty proud of me too! Like you, I thrive on learning new things and enjoy the challenge of being at university. We should start a new thread for mature students...

:)
A new thread is a great idea! Kudos to you for earning your degree now. :-6

I too would like fulfillment, passion etc. Rich would also be nice. :wah: Nothing to obvious, a paycheck in the mid six figures monthly would probably be enough for me to live the livestyle to which I would like to become accustom.

First of all I refuse, absolutely refuse to grow up. Lets get that clear.. but as far as work.. hmmm.. 15 years as a chef.. everything from pub grub to 3 Diamond.. managed kitchens. executive chef for a hotel complex with 3 dining rooms.. 3 conference centers.. yeeeeeechhhh.. took a hard right hand turn.. now.. creation of processes for database construction.. hoooo eeeeee.. can you say opposite ends of the spectrum...

Just follow your heart.. be happy.. and never let anyone tell you what to do.. the only person you have to anwser to is yourself..
