Where'd they go???

Post by koan »

Do you know anyone really, REALLY bad at following directions?

I just gave instructions to someone who was, literally, right across the street from my house using a store phone to call for directions. She got lost. I pretty much told her to cross the street and go left to about the sixth house down. She went around the block a few times and we finally saw her wandering up the street looking dazed. WTF?

I've been given really, REALLY bad directions too. That's why I always carry a road map and get the street address first.

We're talking...if ya get to the red barn, you've gone too far. Ya wanna go back and take a left. Then ya keep goin down dat road til you see the Macs. If ya see that, you've gone too far. Ya wanna go back and....

LOL

I think I know how you feel. There was a coworker once who asked directions how to get back to the highway from the jobsite. I watched two people try to explain it to her for about five minutes, walked away, came back fifteen minutes later. They had been through two attempted map drawings and were still trying. I decided to give it a go and jumped in. I limited myself to two minutes then ran away. I kid you not...another twenty minutes later I walked by and three other people were trying to tell the same woman the same thing. I would rather just tell her to follow me.

I was organizing a baby shower for a friend a couple of years ago and invited about 14 people who were able to attend. All of them arrived on time at the described location except one. Most of these people I didn't know and about half of them did not know the location. Yet they all arrived safely except this woman. She, apparently, drove around for two hours before she finally gave up and went home. She phoned once for another set of directions. We didn't know what happened to her until the next day. Frankly, I still don't know what happened to her. :wah:

When I'm going somewhere that I don't know the directions, I always look it up on line on "MAPQUEST". Saves having to stop and ask directions on the road! :)

I sympathise. I`m from London where it is very very difficult t o `follow directions` because of all of the blocked off roads, one way streets, diversions, road works, etc. Then I move down here and lo and behold the road I now live in is closed off half way down it and the other half is one way only. So if anybody asks me where I live and they are literally standing more than 6 houses away, I have to say, "Drive in the opposite direction from where I live. Turn left, turn first right, drive up that road, turn first left, follow the road as it swings round and voila, oh,by the way, you`re 30 feet away at the moment!" Going in the opposite direction is even worse, as it`s "follow the road round, turn first right, follow the road down, turn right, turn second right, follow the one way system and stop about 30 feet from where you are now." D`oh!!!

When I worked at a store, I'd give directions all the time. It drove me crazy when I'd say turn left at the light and would see them turn right!

Go left was the problem. You must have meant her "other left". :wah:

I once stopped and asked for directions in another country.

I asked a passerby if he knew the way to a certain town.

He looked puzzled for a moment - then he said 'Yes! indeed I do!' and walked away! :-5

Foreseeing this problem I even told her "with your back to the store" so she would get the correct left.

He looked puzzled for a moment - then he said 'Yes! indeed I do!' and walked away!
Perhaps he knew the quickest way and didn't want to clutter the path by giving out the information. :wah:

I usually tell people "driver's side" or "passenger's side" in case they don't

I used to work in a pizza shop and we had a delivery person that just could not understand that odd numbered houses were on one side of the street, even numbers on the other side. Needless to say, he didn't work there long.

Don't know how or why I found this thread again. It was about getting lost, so there ya go.

I saw Scary Movie 4 recently and they had this scene where the heroine is given directions written in blood on the wall. She squints and says "I can't read that!" It reforms into a google map. lol.

I'm pretty good with directions, but my parents are hopeless. My mum would have the map upside down and forget any directions I would give her, and my dad would just ignore them completely, go his own direction that he feels is right, then get lost, and then have the nerve of blaming me, because I told him to go that way!! :-5
