Inter Office Affairs

Post by minks »

Wellllll it seems we have our own little inter office affair going on here, 2 of our staff have been caught getting awful close to each other. Neither has been confronted, so far it has been 2 incidents spotted by one employee so the rest of us admin are on a kind of alert.

Here is a few of our issues

1) both are married...

2) production is suffering

3) we have an office christmas party coming up how do we face the spouces.

4) the male staff member has already been diciplined 2 previous times for hitting on one of the other female members here....

My take on it... fire him! And put her on probation. Yeah I am a hard ass but I don't care, what they are doing is wrong in too many ways.

Fishing off the company pier is STUPID! Everyone ALWAYS knows....you cannot hide it and, as Minks says, it creates big problems with morale!

Is there a stated company policy against this, Minks, or will it fall under general "harassment" policies?

ooo Lulu nobody is being harassed that is the kicker both parties seem to be happily going about their way with this little fling.

No luckily I do not have to dicipline anyone, I have been told to just keep my eyes open. We don't have a policy set up for this kind of thing, it's a tad out of our realm and obviously after the first incident we should have done some kind of policy up.

It is something we can't just let go because as I mentioned the Mr. in this has already been busted 2 other times for hitting on one of the other gals here. Sorry now that was a bad scene and she is his boss. Argh he is walking on thin ice if you ask me. And yes morale is slipping as is our production, I mean the man party has been so distracted he nearly made a horrific error in building using the wrong product, and a failure could have meant an explosion. Not something to take lightly.

Ahhh...that's probably the secret! It's when they start MOOONING over the conference table and having frequent little "meetings" in supply cabinets that people get wise.

Well Pinks as I stated, it is affecting our production, our chief engineer is making errors a common idiot would not even make.... not like him.

Minks...is she getting preferential treatment? Because that can happen...and it begins to fall under the "hostile work environment" sanctions.

sorry Lu2 I had to laugh at the preferential treatment statement there yeah like cow eyes and kisses HAH! we are a tiny company and she is the only female back in our production area, and I think she is lapping up this attention like a starved puppy, I have seen her fawning all over our Jr Engineer as well, and I am concerned because the big boss has taken this woman into her trust to help with monitoring production and morale back there... we are an oddly split company our production staff all speak russian and are always chatting in russian so none of us admin have a clue what they are carrying on about so we thought we had a good allie in this woman. Appears not.

As for hostile work environment I don't think that could be it.

RUSSIANS? What the heck are they doing? You know....I could make a case for "hostile work environment" when one group is allowed to converse in a foreign language while actively working.

Are enough people concerned about this that you've discussed it?

3 out of 4 admin staff has talked about it. None of us has confronted the offenders as of yet.

And yes they should all be speaking english to us we keep telling them to do so, not use one to translate. Argh

I agree Minks can them both.. But I'm hard ass as well, see this way to many times and there are no winners period. I will admit if it is a big organization and people are dating from different departments that's OK by me. But in the same departments or with the boss NO...

hehehe that is a good one Carla.

Yep this company is to small to have 2 lustful puppies mooning about. Hey dating is ok like you said in a big company and work is not being dragged down. These 2 are married, each to somone else. So we have failed production, and the potential for 2 failed marriages, they are cheating both the company and personal lives Argh!!!

But when you think about it minks, Since admin staff has not yet spoken to these lovebirds about there being no romance allowed in the workplace, then how would they know & or even why should they not keep doing what they're doing. "Especially", since as you said, the company does not have a "Company policy" in place, advising them that such activities are phohibited. And as for "not speaking in foreign langages", that also should be in the "Company Policy", if that is what in fact is desired by the admin. You also mentioned that the "guy" should be canned, but it seems it really takes two to tango. "He" could & most likely would bring a lawsuit against the company, if just "he" was let go for this escapade. He would have nothing to loose at this point & everything to gain now, since after being fired for this transgression, his "wife" now enters the picture, thus making things rather robust!

Do you know either of their spouses? How horrible if it's discovered and they all turn to YOU, asking why nobody told them! Will you and a group approach the appropriate managers?

Fortunately (hahaha my soap opera funny you bad lulu bad bad) I have only met "his" spouse before. Only 1 time, but I will have to endure the up coming christmas party with both their spouses present.

Yes it does take 2 to tango, and yes bad our company for no policy... but.... the man has been documented before for his behavior towards one of our other female staff, it's on record for 2 prior incidents... so policy or no policy surely that stands for something.

Sure cheating is none of my business when it comes to affairs of the heart, but...... this is his 3rd incident.

I MUST join the three of you -- I hate to shop also!

I can't tell you the last time I was in a mall.

Oh but it is, again I repeat, it's the 3rd incident... 2 different female staff members, yes his work is suffering hugely now with this current thing. He needs to go, believe me if it were me he was hitting on.... He would feel the pain, and would be walking funny, that is Harassment bottom line. Just because the one female is lapping it up, doesn't mean he is doing nothing wrong, his first victim was truly disturbed by it. He should have been sacked way back, but has had his warnings... His time is soooo done.(if I were boss)

Minks if your company doesn't an employee handbook with regards to professional behavior in the work place, now is the time to get one,and fast.;) To include dress code, phone, and office etiquette.

I also think you still can let then both go for innaproprate behavior in the work place. They are putting everyone else in a position of accepting this when they don't want to. I don't know the labor laws in Canada but now is the time to get familiar with them.

I also think 1 or both can be canned just for their performance on the job alone. If it is truly causing the company clients they have to go. I don't know who is above them but they must get involved for all the employees benefit.

Do you have a Board they can come right in and make them both walk out of the building today, turn in there key, clean out there desk. The Board has that power over high level excempt employees, I know I have seen it happen.

I wish it were up to me, I know the powers that be have to take it to the next level, yes we have labor laws here that state something to the affect that he is most definately in the wrong as for her, I would have to check it to.

It's funny the timing of this thread. I took my boss aside 2 weeks ago and said, "I don't know what is going on between you and T, and I don't want to know. All I know is what I have seen is very inappropriate in a place of business. What ever your feelings are need to be left at the door. When you walk in, you are her boss the same as you are for the rest of us. This preferential treatment has to stop. I'll give you 2 weeks to show you are willing to treat us all the same and save you some embarrassment, or I will go to the board and tell them everything I've seen."

Long story short, nothing changed. He denied everything all the bartenders and customers said they have seen. She got fired by the board for an accumulation of things. Too many call offs that he would cover for her, etc.

I'm never happy to see anyone lose their job, but it is like a big weight has been lifted. None of us dread going to work now. If you can't separate work from personal feelings, one or the other has to be given up.
