Why do we do this to ourselves??
We do it.. ( I do it) because it is great tranquilizer... a great social tool.. a great uninhibitor. It is also a quiet monster. Its effects are insidious. It can be dangerous. Alcoholism runs in my family. I married an alcoholic. The cruelest curse is that one of my sons has inherited the disease of substance abuse.

Hi Hammi,
I think that they do say it can run in familys, but i've seen friends that have kicked one bad habit and moved on to another, i think some people just have more addictive personalities, for some it's drugs, other's it's gambling and for some it's SEX. What a bummer eh

Why do we do this to ourselves??
Bit late on in the thread, but I thought I would give my take on the subject:)
I do enjoy a drink, sometimes to excess. but I don't do it every day (can't afford to). I used to go out drinking with my dad most nights, used to sit in the pubs, with the same group of people, just chatting about life and things. It just became a habit, an addiction.
Then I met my wife, Archie came along and I stopped drinking so much. Lifes priorities changed. If I can't afford a drink, I don't drink. simple as that.
I use alcohol as a means to relaxing, especially after a week of being completely wound up at work. It just helps me wind down.
I am aware of the fact that children do pick up on their parents life styles, so if I am drinking at home, I avoid drinking when Archie is around, and wait untill he has gone to bed.
Would I give up drinking? If it was Affecting Archie or Carrie then absolutely, yes. Definately. I would never let my drinking hurt my family.
Just my take on the subject:)

Behaviour breeds behaviour - treat people how you would like to be treated yourself

For myself I see no problem having a drink or two in the evenings. For me it is wine. Having grown up on a farm and growing grapes for wine it was a natural thing. Many nights I don't indulge at all then there are the occasional celebrations with friends throughout the year that can leave me half snockered.
I went through that "get falling down drunk" stage in my younger years hanging out with my friends on Friday night. But life changes and so do we hopefully. I can't remember the last time I got drunk. It's when we lose control of ourselves and can't stop night after night that it becomes a problem. Having a drink or two with dinner isn't a problem, at least for me.

It was for me Hammy. I guess the main thing is just take responsibility for ourselves and our actions. Easier said than done I know.

Yes it does. It is a great relaxer for many people, myself included. For each generation life seems to become more complicated, faster paced, trying to escape those pressures is natural. It's easy to lose control and indulge too much sometimes. Knowing when to stop is easy for some and hard for others. Wish I could say I have always known when to stop.

I love to be spontaneous and you can't always do that with small kids around...
I agree.
I think it *helps* us to stay within the routine that our lives are.
Letting loose helps you to keep control at other times in your life
It's a balance of some sort, isn't it? :-6

That's true, too, Hammie :-6
It's hard to love what you do seven days a week.
But as long as we don't *hate* it, I figure we're ahead of the game :guitarist
It's that 'expectation' thing again
