Ledership and Charisma

Post by MOTime »

Is Charisma necessary in order to have good Leadership qualities?

Many people belive that it is needed and many people belive that it is not needed.

I fall into the second category mostly beacuse many people have turned to me in the past and asked me to lead but I have no charisma what so ever.

So what does the population of FG think is Charisma needed in order to be a leader?:-5

Great question :-6

First of all, how do you define charisma? It's clearly an intangible quality.

I think that most successful leaders definitely have it -- and it's an important part of their success, I would think.

I guess it is hard to define Charisma but i would say that it is the abillity to give speeches talk in public and keep peoples attention while you explain some thing or suggest what to do.

I think charisma can make a leader more effective but it is not necessary. A good leader is able to motivate people and charisma can help. A good leader IMO is someone who get's people to work together to accomplish a common goal. In this respect you would have to say Hitler had charisma and was a good leader although he worked for evil purposes. I think most great leaders probably had some charisma.
You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be misquoted, then used against you.

Charisma = charm, magnetism, presence.

I don't think this is a pre-requisite for effective leadership, and in some instances, can lead to barriers within the team.

If someone is particularly charismatic, a less confident person may not want to go to that person for help, for fear of being judged.

I think the key skills needed for effective leadership are;

Communication Skills / Interpersonal Skills

Empathy and understanding

Team working

Business Acumen (ability to see the bigger picture)

Experience of Leading and developing others (professionally)

Innovation

Interesting Q! :)

I would say that good leadership has more to do with integrity than charisma.

I think charisma in the wrong hands like Zinky pointed out with Hitler, can be very dangerous. And in lesser cases, I think charisma is more about affecting people in a way that allows the leader to control them in a less honorable way.

Trying to think of bosses and higher-ups I've had and presidents past and others in the leadership field....I would say I've been more affected by people with strength of character and respect for self and others, rather than any charismatic charm.

i dont think charisma makes for a good leader. it is more important to have integrity, and the ability to have empathy and see the big picture. you also have to be a natural leader, not a follower by nature. :)

Ah, but

Charisma often makes people notice someone

And isn't that important so they will listen to your message? :-6

charisma, may get you the attention but you are not going to keep it unless you have some kind of depth and values about you. i wont follow someone i can't respect. and respect is not something i hand out lightly.

Right! :)

Although the attractiveness part is really unfair.

That takes no real skill or special talent

Just the luck of the draw :-6

Hammie :)

I totally agree with you

I was referring *only* to appearance

whereas you are talking about the WHOLE being

and I think you're absolutely right :-6

That's well said, Pinkster.
