Cultural Identity
How would you describe your culture?
Do you place yourself in more than one group? None at all? How strong is your desire to belong to your culture?

Cultural Identity
Thats an interesting question.
I thought I knew what culture I belonged to. But when you start to delve back deeper into your roots, you find out a few suprises.
For instance, if you think you belong to western civilisation....take a deeper look.

Cultural Identity
I do not feel a strong bond with any cultural identity right now. Most likely because my view of the culture is quite negative. I am thankful that I don't live in worse conditions than I do but I am do not feel bonded to it as a strong entity. My description of it would be quite harsh. I'm wondering if anyone here can convince me of "western" virtues. I understand the ideals just don't see them at work.

I am a mutt and quite happy to remain as such.

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be misquoted, then used against you.

Strong roots with branches everywhere.

I "place myself" wherever I feel I belong. Works for me!

I'm not sure what those "virtues" are. Many "cultures" in the world have
different values for "virtue" and get along very well. It seems difficult for
"westerners" to see this, for some reason, rather than accept the fact.

I am Irish, if you are Irish you certainly have few identity problems as we definetly know who we are and who we are not. Post colonial, generally white, western European Catholics living on a little green island making lots of money and getting on with it. I am quite happily western actually, its what I am, and by and large I think western civilization is great, I don't have any desire to be anything else, but I am interested in other cultures and civilizations as all of the great world cultures are fascinacting in their own ways, (thats probably a very western attitude, but I would say curisoity is one of the defining things about western culture), to put it simply "I ams what I ams" (me 2006), happy to be so, and "if you ain't where you is, yous noplace" (God, 1978)
"We are never so happy, never so unhappy, as we imagine"

I like that "I yam what I yam..." That works.
I suppose foremost, I'm just an American white girl. I mention the white only because like any ethnicity, it's a culture in itself. I'm not especially patriotic and I'll be the first to criticize my country but it is still my home and that counts for something.
I'm part hillbilly, part refined, have German and Irish roots, have been a city slicker and a desert rat. I'm blue collar all the way. I'm a human being and have human virtues and human flaws.
I am many cultures within one. I would guess that probably most of us are.

An exchange between Principal Skinner and Groundskeeper Willie :
Willie: "Brothers and sisters are natural born enemies! Like Englishmen and Scots! Or Welshmen and Scots! Or Japanese and Scots! Or Scots and other Scots! Damned Scots! They ruined Scotland!"
Skinner: "You Scots sure are a contentious people."
Willie: "You just made an enemy for life!"
