A stroll down memory lane....

Post by minks »

Ok gang, the holiday season is fast approaching, we kick off with the US Thanksgiving and it's just going to snowball to Christmas.

Lets all share our fond or not so fond memories of holiday's past.

Let me start

In my family we set up the tree early to mid December, and in time gifts appear under the tree from family to family. So this one year in my 20's the first gift to appear was a very strange round box, much like a squatty hat box. I was intrigued so one eve when every one was out, I crawled under the tree to see if I could figure it out (I never peak only shake) and I dragged it out it was about 1.5 feet in diameter, and extreemly light weight. I shook it and it was solid, no rattlie parts. It was for me, from my brother. I stuck it back under the tree and pondered it till christmas day. It was torture cause with each new gift put under the tree it got pushed further and further to the back of the gifts.

FINALLY the big day, I made my brother haul everything out ahead of that gift so I could open it first.

OMG I was so excited, it seemed so exotic, the shape was so different from the other boxes. It was wrapped up so nice... I tore into it, and pulled off the bow and paper, and to my ummmmmm not so amused amasement.... he had constructed this circular box his self out of cardboard and tape so it was looking less exotic, and when I looked inside......... still hoping.... it was

A hubcap for my car ahahahahahahahahaha (used too)

I have to admit at the time I was disappointed but not long after I was highly amused.... only he knew the secret of this hubcap. Only he knew I lost it doing something stupid like driving impaired and hitting a nasty curb... ah the silly things we do in our youth

The infamous threat of no Christmas presents.............................

*yikes*

Little brother Roger, the youngest child, had a Winnie the Pooh. Ratty and well loved. But we were always the rats, and teased poor Pooh Bear.

My mother had those horrid carved wood spoon and fork decorations hanging on the wall. Hideous, but good for childhood sport events. One day Little Roger came by with the Pooh, and we decided a little baseball season was in order.

Down came the spoon, a perfect bat for my older brother, with me as the pitcher.

Whack-there went the Pooh Bear.

Foul ball. Better try again.

Whack again-nah, still not any good.

Whack again-and it was the spoon.

Oh, oh. What did six kids do to try and hide the broken object of affection of our dear mother, while Little Roger is crying about his Bear? Why, hang it back up on the wall, she would never notice a thing.

"Sssh, the front door is opening, stop sniffling, Roger!"

Well, first thing she saw was the broken spoon. Forget about the toys all over the place, bags of groceries in her hands, and schoolbooks left unopened. She saw the spoon.

"Well, I guess Santa is not coming to this house!"

Oh, we were in big trouble. We had to fess up what we did, to the disharmony of Roger's sniffling in the background. We did alot of chores that year, and had it held over our heads-"No Christmas this year!"

I haven't made presents for years, but I'm going to make some special cards this year.

The first time I remember celebrating Christmas I was 6 years old, and I had found out about Santa Claus and the reindeer, having to go to sleep early or he wouldn't come.

My mom let me sleep in her bed (in the living room!) and I was soooo excited! I woke up sometime in the night, and heard some thumping, sounded like it was on the roof, and then I heard the sound of jingle bells. I was scared sh8tless! I remember laying there, not daring to breathe. I still have no idea what the heck that was...I know my folks didn't go up on the roof! My folks were Jewish (as I am, but a Christian non-the-less) and definately not into pretending Santa was on the roof!

When I grew up and moved out and was finally able to have a tree, I put it up day after Thanksgiving, and took it down in April!

I love home made gifts - that doesn't happen much any more.

Chons - I love to crochet - embroider - sew.

last year I made my nephew & sister (his mom) a photo album, starting from my sister's baby shower to current - I always had a camera and I always had my nephew's. I laughed at some photos and cried at some. My one nephew died last year(27 yrs. old), so I tried to keep things up lifting for all of us, I wrote funny, cool captions.

My nephew (34 yrs. old) said it was his bestest present ever - That's a Great Christmas present.

One Christmas we were staying at my Nan and Grandad's house. I was sooo excited that I just wouldn't go to sleep, I kept coming downstairs and the presents were being moved from room to room to keep them hidden from me, eventually they let me open a small present to get me to stay in bed!

I always loved staying at their house, my little brother and I were doted on by the family. Grandad was a dreyman for Whitebread's breweries and used to have a couple of crates of beer, some mixers and spirits all lined up in the front room, he was from a big family so there were lots a relatives popping in for a 'quick Christmas drink' - great fun for us kids!

RIP Grandad - you're still loved and missed xx
