Pretentious Food

Post by Bothwell »

I was posting a reply in another thread when I started to think of this. What is the most pretentious description of a dish you have ever seen. It can be either messing up great basic ingredients, pairing silly tastes together or overly florid descriptions.

Here are some of mine I have seen.

ROASTED LAMB ON TOASTED RAISIN BRIOCHE

Thinly sliced Leg of Lamb and goat cheese served with mint and wasabi sauce

Why Mess with lamb and mint

Tender Pork Loin Rubbed w/ a Sweet Chili Guava Barbeque Glaze Served

w/ Mashed Sweet Potato & Topped w/ a Mango Coulis & Candied Pecans...

Whaaaat

Traditional French Onion Soup

Laced w/ Sherry & Served w/ Crouton & Danish Emmentaler Swiss Cheese

Didn't know Traditional French onion soup had sherry in, Danish/Swiss Emmentahl ?? which is it.

well this is decidedly UNpretentious! Bothwell just called me, he hit a huge mallard with his car and he's sent me a photo of it with his picturephone, he's going to cook it! ROADKILL! ~~HAHAHAHA...he said he will remove the skin, slice off the breasts and saute them with shallots and marsala...i guess that's one way to pick up dinner! so i suppose when he's over here next trip we'll be scraping up the armadillos on the side of the road :yh_drool

LC, you mean you don't eat your roadkill???!!!?!?!!?!?! That's just wasteful.... :yh_rotfl

Speaking of pretentious...Bullet and I had dinner at a five-star restaurant a few weeks ago. WOW. Was that ever cool...

I'm not really comfortable in super fancy places like that, but this was a special occasion and it was kinda fun, pretending we did stuff like this all the time. The descriptions on the menu were elaborate: "The finest cut fillet mignon, seared with a blend of exotic spices, served on a bed (Yup, it really said "bed") of creamy garlic russet mashed potatoes...." etc, etc, yada, yada. It took longer to read the menu than it did to eat!
[FONT=Arial Black]I hope you cherish this sweet way of life, and I hope you know that it comes with a price.

Bullet's trial was a farce. Can I get an AMEN?????

We won't be punished for our sins, but BY them.

the canonical ingredient to make any dish pretentious seems to be the addition of a mango chutney sauce.

:wah: Quality thread Bothwell.

It took me awhile to remember what this dish was 'called' or assembled with.

A few years ago about ten of us went out to dinner in Melbourne city, someone had chosen an up-market Italian place....Anyhow, the guy sitting next to me ordered, wait for it......

Venison Fettuccini in Chocolate sauce :yh_giggle

Needless to say his reaction was priceless on the first mouthful. He ended up ordering something else. :wah:

Yes the Mallard was delicious, bloody should be he cost me a £100 heated door mirror!!!. Just did the breasts as I could not be bothered to hang it. Shallots and Butter in the pan, sear the breasts, chuck in a glass of Marsala and in the oven for 10 mins, lovely jubbly.

Oh sorry i should say, I introduced some shallots to the pan and accompanied them with some unsalted french butter from cows that only fed on bordeaux grass, the duck breasts were then gently reposed on said butter and given the merest hint of colour before being wafted to the oven for a gentle 10 minutes combustion of their flesh

Jika, I saw some chilli and chocolate sausages on sale at a farmers market over here, after laughing my head off i was told by the guy running the stall that the Inca's had been using chocolate for cooking for centuries!! bloody told me!! So fair go I am going to try some next week.

I most certainly did eat it. Shame Badgers are not edible, I have seen 6 on the side of the road in the last 2 days, it's breeding season and they are really daft when it comes to traffic, of course you also have farmers dumping the ones they have shot, which is illegal.

Ut oh!............hope you've got a good Cab Sav to wash that down with!

May I suggest a Crabtree! (Australian of course) The guy who owns this boutique winery is a retired Barrister from the 'Ol' Bailey'! We got chatting to him and turns out it was his dream to have his own winery in retirement. :) BAROSSA VALLEY S.A.

He is now, world renowned for his blends, Cab Merlot etc and unfortunately for us 90+ % of his produce is exported back to the UK or Europe.

Arrrgh....I am green with jealousy!!!

Just a country girl here, give me good aged ribeye with just the right amount of marbling and I'll cook you a steak that melts in your mouth like butter!!!

Godiva Girl wrote: Yes, a perfectly aged ribeye or new york strip steak, cooked just barely medium rare so it's not raw but still good and bloody. That with a good glass of red wine, perfect dinner.
