Searchers find lost dad dead
The body of a San Francisco man who had walked into the Oregon wilderness to find help for his stranded family was found Wednesday. Part of me hoped they would find him alive, but another part of me figured they would not. That is sad when something like this happens. He was just trying to save his family.

I just want to say something about this story... it's very easy to sit
at home and second guess all this... but when you really think about it,
those 2 people, that mom and that dad, must have agonized over their
decision to have the dad go for help.
I don't know if any of you heard the James and Jennifer Stolpa story,
in that one the dad leaving and going for help worked out and all 3 of
them got out alive.
That mom to me is unbelieveable, breast-feeding those 2 kids for all that
time. Her body must have drawn on every reserve it had.
But I do have to say, I was taught years ago (Brownies even maybe?)
that the very SECOND you realized you were lost, stay put. The car was
a little bit better "shelter" than the outdoors. And I wouldn't have
used ALL of the gas nor burned the tires, once that snow melted (which
it had) they might have been able to turn around and get out of there.
It just really brings home the need to PREPARE for any and every
eventuality. Listening to some of those copter pilots, if I'm ever in
conditions like those I'm making sure I have a couple bright orange
tarps with me.
It's really, really a sad lesson for all of us.

Authorities: Kims took road opened by vandal
James Kim and his family were able to drive down a remote logging road because a vandal had cut open a locked metal gate, authorities say. The family got stranded on the normally closed road, and Kim died of exposure after setting out on foot to find help......this makes the story even more tragic, it didn't have to happen.
