I get my train tickets online, you put in your departure point, destination, time date, single, return, all that stuff. It then gives me options that fit my travel plans, including connections. If my journeys a few days away, they post my tickets, if it's next day, you get a ref number to give at the ticket window, and they just print out your ticket(s). I'm in the Midlands and use Central trains website, you'll have to check your local operator.
