Fake PMs

Post by RedGlitter »

Apparently because of the nastiness that transpired, some certain people are up to their childish games again which includes baiting others through phony PMs. Still.

In the light of this, if any of you have received or do receive a PM "from" me, please check with me on it. I do not send rude PMs nor do I gossip so that would be a tip-off that it's fake.

Some people will stoop to any old reindeer games, looks like.

Thanks!

How does one recognise (or send!) a "phony PM"?[1]

Presumably the best course of action would be to report any such received so

that "official" action can be taken.

Please will someone send me a fake PM, of a non-insulting nature, clearly marked

"This is a fake e-mail" or something like that, so that no-one gets into trouble?

Just for interest. Thanks.

I was wondering if he'd be able to tell who it was from if I did that?

Then again, I'd hate to trouble Tombstone with stupid things like this. It's all so childish.

Bill, I would send you one, but I don't know how. Sorry.

A person may be able to "fake" the quotes temporarily, but they cannot fake where the PM came from.

If you have suspicious PM's - send to me. Please do a little research first and indicate where items (quotes) were changed. My patience for this kind of stuff has dropped off the scale.

That would work with faking the original sender of an embeded PM - say one you were forwarding or to invent a message "you've received" from scratch - but, given that you cannot intercept the message between the submit and the send, I don't see how you can do that for the immediate sender.

No doubt there is a way but I'm not savvy enough to see it.

Okay when I first opened this thread I thought it said "Fake PMS?" So I thought this was a thread about woman faking symptoms of PMS(pre menstrual syndrome). I then thought I would sneak in and find out just how women fake this and why they would want too. Then of course it turned into something different or did it?:wah:

I'm really hoping admin can figure out who the person is that's so intent on causing problems in here at the expense of people's feelings. And when it IS discovered, I hope the person's identity is revealed on the public boards because I'm getting pretty sick of being accused of this sort of thing.

It's very interesting, isn't it? Last week, much was made of "leaked" private messages which supposedly contained insulting comments about various members...and everyone reacted as if they'd been absolutely, without question verified as "true."

Now, we have at least two members who've been receiving "false" private messages.

I tried on several occasions last week to question whether or not those "leaked" messages were valid and nobody seemed to consider my question.

Interesting. Which are real and which are false?

I've no personal stake in any of this....but it does worry me that people have been accused/suspected of these things and NOW it turns out that some phony messages are circulating. What if they've been wrongly accused?

Am I the only one who's considering this possibility?

FLOPSTOCK: "The original post doesn't actually 'say' that she received one, it implies that others might possibly get one appearing to come from her."

+++++++++++++ Not to belabor this point, but guppy says SHE received "altered" private messages, too. So, it's NOT just one person.

One more comment and then I'm through. A lot of blame was tossed around here last week and I'm wondering how much of it was a direct result of tampered messages. If so...some people need to rethink that anger.

She must have, if she 'knows' it was tappered with. :thinking:It was only twenty posts back in this thread. I'm amazed that anyone takes any quoted text in any PM at face value, given how obviously trivial it is for the content to have been changed. Guppy's "just delete em" seems perfect advice for every inflamatory PM in the system unless the quoted altered text bears one's own name in which case yes, forwarding it as a complaint with an explanation sounds reasonable.

Why the quotes around 'knows'?

I can't see why any of this should be a big problem, now that Tombstone has laid down strict rules starting from a day or so ago. And stated that he will enforce them.

If you just think something may be happening, wait until you are sure.

If you are sure, check your facts, because to be fair to everyone - and all are innocent until proven otherwise - you will presumably be expected to substantiate your claims with evidence.

If you have shared your password with anyone, change it now. It's like banking. You have less comeback if you've been socially careless.

If you think you have a real case - present the whole thing - with evidence - to Tombstone, and hopefully threads like this one and the accompanying non-specific bad feeling, should not ever again be necessary.

It's worth pointing out that the administrator of this site will have access to

records of every single keystroke transmitted[1], and logs of all articles, PMs,

originating IP addresses, etc. He can unpick all the chains of intrigue, should

he decide that's what he wants to do, and even, if necessary[2] inform the

upstream ISP, so that further action can be taken - such as miscreants being

TOS'ed by their ISPs[3].

[1] Where legally allowed (even legalities may be over-ridden, though!).

[2] This might actually be *required* under some circumstances.

[3] Terms of service pass "along the chain". Your ISP will normally stipulate

this in their terms of service. Violate your ISP's TOS here, and your ISP

would almost certainly regard it as infringing *their* TOS directly.

"But," says the Reader, "the fighting is a dead giveaway isn't it? It couldn't have developed by chance. It proves the messages exist, and so therefore, by your own arguments, you wrote them. QED"

"Oh dear," says the Poster, "I hadn't thought of that," and promptly vanishes from the board in a puff of logic. Well, not permanently vanishes, but the principle's there.

Sharing passwords is really unfortunate, and can place the person sharing in
