Answer the following questions in complete sentences:
1. What is a leader?
Some one who can see the big picture, delegate and create an atmosphere of team build. Along with making the job worth coming in for each day. A leader is not necessarily the smartest one always. A leader is the one others look to for guidance. A leader earns others respect by example.
2. What qualities would you look for in a leader?
Honesty, Intregerity, and a sense of humor. I look for some one who backs their employees and gives them the credit for jobs well done, along with guidence to improve their skill for growth in the company.
How would you handle it if you were the leader and . . . First and foremost you should always know the labor laws inside out.. workers are protected, and you must follow the law to the letter
3. You hired your friend, but they showed up drunk on a busy day?
This actually happend to me. I recommended my dear friend of 35 years now for a job working for my sister in the business office. Well she showed up drunk and had to be fired. She later redemed herself and went on the become a excellent employee.
4. A good worker lied to you about being sick, then you saw them later that day at the lake?
You can't assume just because they are at the lake that they lied to you, they may have been sick and gone to the lake :-3 . You can't call someone a liar with out concrete proof. You can ask them to bring a slip from the doctors next time, but you can't do that even. They have to be out 3 days before you can request a slip from their doctor.
5. A good employee was caught shoplifting for the first time?
If they were stealing from their place of employment that's ground for termination. If it was from some where else it's none of your business.
6. For the second time?
Still none of your business unless it's thieft on the job. If they come to you and tell you what has happened you might try to get them counseling. That is all your leagally can do.
7. You are asked to do something that you don’t know how to do, like setting up a schedule, a new menu, or cataloging a warehouse?
Ask for instructions on how they want it done. Ask if there are examples you can use as a guideline. Seek the help of other on this project that may have already done such a task. Or pay out of your own pocket to have some expert do it for you.
8. You are asked to do something that you think is wrong like shredding documents?
State your concerns with the shredding and ask if there is someone else that can do it. If there isn't then you might seek out your Human Resources person for exactly how to handle this issue.
9. You want to give a good worker a raise, but there’s not enough money?
Usually there is always a way to find the money.. and sometimes the recognition is reward enough. You can also make a raise retro active when the money becomes available.
10. A customer fills their gas tank, but then realizes that they left their money at home?
If it is a customer you know, you can probably trust them to return with the money. You can alway offer to drive them to their house if its in the neighborhood and allow them to get the money for the gas. If its someone you don't know forget it, not worth hasseling someone about a tank of gas. Might ask if they would consider mailing it to you.. they may, they may not.. crap shoot..
11. The only person that understands your computer system quits unexpectedly?
As a Leader you should never have all your eggs in one basket so to speak... CROSS TRAINING is a must in any good business. So you screwed up and you will pay a hefty price to get a high paid computer guru to come in and bail you out.. If this person just quit without any notice you don't want to ask him if he/she would help till someone one else is trained.. bit the bullet and start making some calls they are out there...!!
12. You found out that the people working for you have made serious mistakes and you were expected to take the responsibility?
Once again if your managing correctly you would know what is going on in the company. Your supervisors would be reporting to you on all phases of the jobs being done. You would require weekly meetings and reports. There should be no surprises of this nature if your a true LEADER. If your lucky the problems can be fixed if they can't. IT IS PROBABLY THE END OF YOUR JOB WITH THE COMPANY.. IT'S YOUR RESPONSIBILTY YOU GO FIRST..

Answer the following questions in complete sentences:
1. What is a leader?
Anyone who is looked up to by others.
2. What qualities would you look for in a leader?
Someone who knows how to empower others, who is humble, compassionate and calm in a crisis.
How would you handle it if you were the leader and . . .
3. You hired your friend, but they showed up drunk on a busy day?
I would send them home and not schedule them to work again for a week. If it happened again I would fire them.
4. A good worker lied to you about being sick, then you saw them later that day at the lake?
If they ask for another day off soon after I would tell them I knew about the lake and ask them if they had lost interest in the job. Being an otherwise good employee deserves some slack.
5. A good employee was caught shoplifting for the first time?
I would ask them what made them feel like they had the right to steal, pay was too low, unhappy with treatment? If it was minor theft I would probably give a warning and make sure they were not scheduled to work alone. If possible I'd put them somewhere were they were more visible. If it was a major theft I would charge them.
6. For the second time?
I would charge them and fire them.
7. You are asked to do something that you don’t know how to do, like setting up a schedule, a new menu, or cataloging a warehouse?
I would ask for someone to show me or tell me how the task was to be performed or give some information on what they were expecting. I would also ask who I should go to if I had any questions.
8. You are asked to do something that you think is wrong like shredding documents?
If I thought it was illegal I would question it and refuse if I was not satisfied with the answer. They could fire me and that would be fine.
9. You want to give a good worker a raise, but there’s not enough money?
I would try to find an affordable reward such as a one time bonus or a small gift if they did something outstanding I would buy it myself.
10. A customer fills their gas tank, but then realizes that they left their money at home?
I would get their phone number, driver's licence number and licence plate. Write the dollar amount and have them sign it.
11. The only person that understands your computer system quits unexpectedly?
Pray. :wah: Take a computer course myself if possible or look for a replacement employee with knowledge of the system.
12. You found out that the people working for you have made serious mistakes and you were expected to take the responsibility?
This has happened before. I take responsibility as the "boss", find out how it happened and explain what I will do to either correct the problem or make sure it will never happen again.

What is a leader?
Someone who possesses certain characteristics, one of which is not committing by walking into a situation where they have been asked to take a stand and the details will be made clear later.

[QUOTE=Jives]I actually have a story for each of these scenarios: I'll post them later, in the meantime think about these questions:
Answer the following questions in complete sentences:
1. What is a leader?
Someone who I believe in, and share in the same values and beliefs but they are a level higher and I am willing to follow them and learn from them.
2. What qualities would you look for in a leader?
Honety and integrity, drive, fortitude, creativity, and a progressive thinker, fairness, open minded, un-biased.
How would you handle it if you were the leader and . . .
3. You hired your friend, but they showed up drunk on a busy day?
Fire their sorry ass, ok really, they would receive a stern warning, be thrown on probation and tell them they are fired if it or anything similar happens again and explain the risks and loss they created.
4. A good worker lied to you about being sick, then you saw them later that day at the lake?
Point and laugh and tell them if you ever see that again, you won't be afraid to fire them.
5. A good employee was caught shoplifting for the first time?
Feel sorry for them and then explain to them it is criminal offense and after this warning if it happens again, they will be terminated.
6. For the second time?
Fire them as fair warning was given.
7. You are asked to do something that you don’t know how to do, like setting up a schedule, a new menu, or cataloging a warehouse?
Ask a million questions and then jump in and do your best (welcome to my job)
8. You are asked to do something that you think is wrong like shredding documents?
Oiy Tough one, well do it, and document who asked you to do it, date it and keep that doc in a safe place as you may need it later in life.
9. You want to give a good worker a raise, but there’s not enough money?
Skip the raise as it can't be done. Maybe offer up something else like a reward plan or a day off. I dunno some companies would explain the financial difficulties but I don't think that is info for the average Joe.
10. A customer fills their gas tank, but then realizes that they left their money at home?
Ask them to make a call for someone to come fetch them and take them home while their car and keys remain in your posession.
11. The only person that understands your computer system quits unexpectedly?
1) panic then have a break down
2) hope you had that person sign a confidentiality form when they started.
3) ask fellow employees to help pitch in as best as they can to get your system going again and hope for the best (gawd never get into that kind of situation)
12. You found out that the people working for you have made serious mistakes and you were expected to take the responsibility?
BOLT!
Seriously, stand up for yourself and say Not a chance in Hades, this is what I have done, this is how I did it. To the best of my knowledge I did my job correctly.
But I guess in the real world, you being the supervisor or boss or leader are responsible for your underlings and thier actions so your training and tutaledge should have ensured they did things correctly. If they failed then your going to take the blame no matter what so I guess you accept it, and assure the boss it won't happen again. Now if this person has left the company I would work hard at clearing up their mess. if this person remains I would challenge them to a "match" outside by the bike racks, and after explain the horrible position they have put you in by failing to do the job, and tell them if they do not pull up their socks they will be let go.

since i spent years undercover busting shoplifters i would say that when one is caught , it is NEVER their first time. only the first time caught. and if someone shoplifts, it is a fairly good indicator of character in general. stealing is stealing.

[QUOTE=Jives]I actually have a story for each of these scenarios: I'll post them later, in the meantime think about these questions:
Answer the following questions in complete sentences:
1. What is a leader
Different situations require different talents. I think many times a leader is just the one who takes it upon themselves to get the job done. Or else is the one hired to do the job. Not all leaders are chosen by the following.
2.What qualities would you look for in a leader?
totally honest? I have never trusted anyone enough to chose them to lead me. I've had leaders but they were chosen by others
3. You hired your friend, but they showed up drunk on a busy day?
Once or twice, I'd do nothing eventually they would be gone.
4. A good worker lied to you about being sick, then you saw them later that day at the lake?
I'd do nothing. I'm at the lake.
5. A good employee was caught shoplifting for the first time?
They'd be fired
6. For the second time?
See above
7. You are asked to do something that you don’t know how to do, like setting up a schedule, a new menu, or cataloging a warehouse?
You call in favors, do some quick research and then do the best you can. Consider it a chance to shine and to show how good you are.
8.You are asked to do something that you think is wrong like shredding documents?
Wouldn't do it. Finding a new job ie easier to do than jail time.
9. You want to give a good worker a raise, but there’s not enough money?
Explain the situation. Most of us have had to deal with unpleasant reality before.

Get ID and tell them to have a nice day sent the money when they get home/

Take responsiblity or be held responcible? You don't need to take responcibility for anything you didn't do but if you have people over you they may hold you responcible and , sad to say , there is nothing you can do about that but eat it with a smile or quit.
Jives, :-5 I j ust noticed the part about complete sentences and sorry pal I ain't going back and change everything now.

OK I want to play too.
