UN-Christmas

Post by Rain »

Is there any UN-Christmas threads here for all of us who don't celebrate? If not... This ones it.

Scrooge? No. I just don't celebrate it. And it's hard to go anywhere in real life without running in to it. Even my classic rock radio station gets into the act. :guitarist :-5

The game board here, where I like to play, is loaded with it and I just have to wait for the turn to pass before I can play again. So... here's the place to come for all of you who don't celebrate it or just want to get away from it for a while.

The only rules are.... NO discussion about anything that has to do with christmas. Let the relief begin ;)

'Tis the culture we live in. There's too much money involved to not overpromote it. But hey, you do your thing and let the rest roll off your back. Have a good regular December Monday.

I'd like to join your thread Rain. I'm into "it" this year but for many years I was not. For many reasons. I was a Humbug. So I think I can understand where you're coming from.

I usually rent a bunch of movies & tuck in....have popcorn and champers and just enjoy a quiet day.

I'm "sitting" for the GIANT SCHNAUZERS for the next two weeks. They are such clowns!

http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/giantschnauzer.htm

The male (Cesare) actually sits and watches television. He gets very excited when horses or other dogs come on the screen and he jumps and barks and DROOLS. I've no idea what he thinks. He's quite large, even for a "GIANT" and he weighs around a hundred pounds. There's no fat on him!

As I told you earlier, Rain....it's like living in a house with ponies!

Say! Want to see something interesting? Look at the VIRGIN KOMODO DRAGON MOM-TO-BE!

I would like to ignore Christmas - Unfortunately, my husband loves Christmas. I suppose I use to. If you don't have toddlers - each year Christmas is different.

And now I'd rather travel - be on a vacation over the holidays. Exchange a hug - a card - and I get diamond type vacations. I like it.

In ancient times there was a festival this time of year to celebrate the ending of the short days of winter and the start of the lenghening of daylight in to summer. maybe you have to live in northern climes to appreciate what it means to see the change. In essence it's a wild urge to celebrate surviving the darkdays of winter. But It's a common theme throughout the world. Chinese new year is around the same time and for the same age old reasons. You will find throughout the world festivals at this time of year irrespective of religious belief or lack of it on the part of the establishment. Even communism couldn't stop new year being celebrated.

http://www.wyrdology.com/festivals/chri ... nalia.html

It's so much a part of our psyche that the early christian church gave in to it and placed christmas at this time of year because they couldn't stop the urge to party. At various times religious types have tried to ban christmas celebrations appalled by the revelry and sheer enjoyment of life it actually represents. Now we have the PC crowd complaining about the religious connotations and the commercialism when all they are really saying is mean is they don't feel the urge to party and life should somehow be more serious.

I don't really celebrate christmas either as I'm not religious -realistically to most people it is not a religious festival however much that might appal the religious establishment and they lament the true meaning of christmas being forgotten when it was never about christ in the first place (be careful which christians you say that to).

I send cards-or rather my wife nags me until I do-I don't go to church cos I would be a hypocrite if i did. But i do love this time of year. Curiously enough I find it offensive that we have happy holidays instead of merry christmas because somehow it seems right people should be merry at this time of year rather than just happy and it seems like a victory for the po-faced who feel they should be ble to tell people what is right and wrong. being scots new year was always a bigger event than christmas anyway, my wife-being english doen't feel the same way about hogmanay but after a couple of pints I stop letting that bother me.

So forget wallowing in self induced misery and celebrate at this time of year for any reason you care to find but most of all to annoy those that tell you you shouldn't or tell you it should be for this or that reason. How about because it represents a triumph over of will over all those who want to control society and tell everybody when it is OK to party and what they should celebrate. A symbolic two fingers at the po faced and leave them to their sanctimonious misery- or one finger if you are american although that always seems a rather apologetic gesture almost as if you don't really want to give offence. Excuse me I'm being unsulting or I could just be pointing at the sky.

I was going to say some more but thought I'd better check with you Rain. Is this thread to talk about not celebrating Cmas or is it for all talk *except* mention of Cmas? :wah: Sorry! I get so confused!

In case it's the latter, I am listening to my Gillian Welch CDs...anyone care for her? She's a favorite of mine. I am working on CDs a good friend asked me to make for her; presently downloading off Rhapsody some more stuff for her.

In the meantime, I've been printing off recipes for my collection. I love to cook and I love that I can come here to the Web any time and get whatever recipe I need. I bought myself a new coat! First one I've had in about ten years. It's purple (ok..."aubergine" so it says) and kind of woolly with a satin lining. It is real nice and yet casual. Can't wait to wear it!

How's everybody else doing? :)

Up my nose? lol No, I don't like all the hypocrisy that surrounds this time of year. Songs that tell us to be merry, and happy, happy, joy, joy, when in reality ppl are struggling with paying the rent and buying food, etc. and now they feel they have to buy presents for ppl etc. It's all very hypocritical imo.

As for the religious side of it, gmc is right in its origins. The Encyclopedia Americana says: “The reason for establishing December 25 as Christmas is somewhat obscure, but it is usually held that the day was chosen to correspond to pagan festivals that took place around the time of the winter solstice, when the days begin to lengthen, to celebrate the ‘rebirth of the sun.’ The Roman Saturnalia (a festival dedicated to Saturn, the god of agriculture, and to the renewed power of the sun), also took place at this time, and some Christmas customs are thought to be rooted in this ancient pagan celebration.—(1977)

Me? wallowing? I just wanted some relief from the TV, radio, parking lots, etc :)

Lulu, I love that the dog watches TV! I'm lmho :D

Patsy, I'll travel with ya. You, me, and Lulu.

RG I'm enjoying this thread so far. No confusion. Whatever trips your trigger ;) A new coat?? I haven't had a new coat in 30 years. Good for you! It sounds beautiful.

Thanks Rain! I'll get to wear my new coat tomorrow when I am up in the hills in Oatman, our local ghost town. That's where they have free roaming burros who live in the hills and roam the town at will. Clark Gable and Carol Lombard honeymooned there.

It's really cold here. WE're out of firewood and our heater's still broken but we're managing. It's amazing what you can do without when you have to.

How's everyone doing tonight?? :)

I just like making decorations for the tree.

I buy people stuff when I see it and don't wait for a reason to give.

Shopping for my tree was a nightmare though. A five foot tall moving Santa novelty that sang. I finally bolted without the tree in hand and told spot "Santa's infected my brain!"

He laughed but I'm serious. It was the closest thing to a migraine I've ever had.
