National Anthems!

good question!

im ashamed to say i dont, ive always thought i should but theres never been a point in my life where learning it was a possibility - i think they should be taught in schools maybe? personally i think it looks really odd at say the olympics when the winner kinda half sings along with his national anthem and you so know he only half knows the words!!!

God save our gracious Queen,

Long live our noble Queen,

God save the Queen;

Send her victorious,

Happy and glorious,

Long to reign over us,

God save the Queen.

Oh Lord our God arise,

Scatter our enemies,

And make them fall

Confound their politics

Frustrate their knavish tricks,

On Thee our hopes we fix

Oh save us all.

Thy choicest gifts in store

On her be pleased to pour;

Long may she reign;

May she defend our laws

And ever give us cause

To sing with heart and voice

God save the Queen.

Our loved Dominion bless

With peace and happiness

From shore to shore;

And let our Empire be

United, loyal, free,

True to herself and Thee

For ever more.

Oh wait...that'sthe British one, I'm American!!!!

Star Spangled Banner

Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,

What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,

O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?

And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.

O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen thro' the mists of the deep,

Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,

What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,

As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?

Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,

In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream:

'Tis the star-spangled banner: O, long may it wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore

That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion

A home and a country should leave us no more?

Their blood has wash'd out their foul footsteps' pollution.

No refuge could save the hireling and slave

From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave:

And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O, thus be it ever when freemen shall stand,

Between their lov'd homes and the war's desolation;

Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land

Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserv'd us as a nation!

Then conquer we must, when our cause is just,

And this be our motto: "In God is our trust"

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

The redwood debacle was one of the funniest things I have ever seen, but you had to watch it from behind the sofa! Nearly as good as Neil Kinnock falling in the sea and then shouting "We'ere allright" repeatedly just before he lost the election.

The Scots and Welsh have thier own rousing anthems which gives them a sence of thier own identity so I believe it would be a good idea to have an English anthem .

Ahem! well OK I won't mention the anti scots verse so carefully kept out of it these days. Still German Georgie won so that's an end to it.

I don't see why you shouldn't, at least you wave the English flag at football matches nowadays, used to be like a red rag to a bull when you used the Union flag.

glad you agree.

cant expect you as a Scot to have a prefference of course but would "there'll always be an England " rouse enough partisan carping at a footie match ....yeah probably

Or what about "Jerusalem"

Go for it. Nice to see the st georges cross being used nowadays flag instead of using the union flag, that is annoying.

Who knows maybe the royal anthem will fall in to disuse
