How would you respond if someone tries to change thier public image?

Post by Marie5656 »

There was an interesting conversation on the morning radio today. It seems Britiney Spears is trying to change the "negative public image" she has.

The radio hosts were then pondering this issue...if a aquaintence or co-worker with a negative image, tried to make an honest attempt to change that image, how would you respond? Would you still see them in the negative light, or try to work with them?

Work with then of course - any honest attempt should be encouraged and supported.

Having said that, however, a celeb trying to change a bad image is likely to be something else again.

I believe wholeheartedly in the ability of a human being to change, so I always try to allow for that. In the end, whether the attempt is an honest one always comes out.

Britney really seams to have gotten a bad (possibly unfair) rap from the media! She grew up in the spotlight early on from her mousketeer days, and never really had a "normal" (whatever that is) childhood! She may have not always made the best decisions concerning her career, & or family life. When she "was in her "rebelious" stage, as most teenagers go through, sure enough there was the media eating it up & blasting her antics all over the rag mags.

It made "them" billions! So they continued to hound her every move even as she got older, (and she was still rebelling, & made mistakes) so as to continue to make the big $$$$$! Yes, She made mistakes, and who doesn't, but the media crucified her for "every one" of hers, as again it made them billions! Britney has always been under microscopic scrutiny by the ever hounding, no holds barred media! It's most likely, we all might crack under that kind of 24/7/365 pressure!

Now, if Britney is really trying to make a serious attempt to clean up her act, and become more responsible, (according to "public standards?), she certainly should be given the chance to do so!!:) Good Luck to Her!!!

Britney "I'm a schlep" Spears has the IQ of a bag of wet mice and has the intention of gaining more publicity, not changing a damn thing about herself. People don't change either famous or not. People feed on fear, ignorance, mistrust, hate, selfishness and more. It's easier and more prevalent.

So, the bubblehead, or any other mortal....I ain't buyin it.

Good to see you back, BR. I would have to say I think I am with you here. I am not sure I would trust someone who said they were going to change..unless they consistently did something over a L**O**N**G period of time to show me they meant it. And I would still not trust thier motives.

I have known people in RL who seemed to change, but never did.

Remember when you were a child and you'd done something wrong? Someone in authority would demand that you apologize and you'd do it, BUT YOU WEREN'T REALLY SORRY! You were only sorry you'd been "caught."

(Sound familiar?)

Seems to me it's like the resolutions so many people make in public. Might even work for a few days. But, sustained improvement is what needs to happen. If it's happening with a close friend or family member, like Marie, I'll do anything I can to support the person.

But in "public" situations like this one....you'll forgive a jaundiced eye.

I think you're being harsh.

People can and do change, whether slowly over time or because of a life changing experience.

Some people even come to recognise that they don't like their life and conciously set out to change it and themselves - it can be done.

Whilst there are people who feed on fear hate etc, they are not the majority and it's certainly not universal.

ETA I agree that with Brittany Spears it is far fetched and *very* unlikely. Celebrity images have no connection to real life and their makeovers do not touch the person in any way.

Madonna's a good example of someone who's changed her image over time. Anyone remember her book? It had metal covers and contained photos of Madonna naked in all sorts of situations, masturbating...really classy stuff.

Then she had children, married and moved to England, began wearing tweeds and pearls and affecting an accent.

Amazing!

Everybody deserves a second chance to change, if they fail, then I guess their true colors will never change.

Exactally Lu, great example! :) Didn't Madonna "Kiss" Britney in provocative video!? Don't think Madonna may consider doing that now! Time will tell if Britney is sincere or not! But she at least needs to be a given chance, & what she does with that chance is up to her! :-2

People in the public eye don't change their image. Their publicists, spin doctors etc etc do this for them gradually, working with the media. You get what you pay for, of course and sometimes it's a tough call. I mean turning Hitler into a caring, loving, well adjusted hero might take a bit of doing, though I believe it's been tried, retrospectively. It's all spin. All theatre.

I'm not sure her level of popularity has changed here, either. BUT...her image/product in photos, etc, is quite different than the earlier one. No more sex books for Madge!

The pubic bought and paid for that bad image. If she really wants to change it now then she'll have to work to earn it. I hate whiny celebrities. If she's going to do it I hope she does it with acceptance and not the whole "people just don't understand me" crap.

Im not a fan of hers. Im not anyones "Fan" It does behoove us to consider that we dont know this woman. A public image was initally designed for her.

It made not only her, but her promoters big money as well. Things may have spiraled out of controll for her and she is trying to put the brakes on. People often create images for themselves. Living up to the image as perceived by the public can cause problems. Innocent and good people are often found guilty, because their image is being judged, not who they really are. Its a trap, for sure. I find hateful, fearful y people to be the minority, thankfully. Their personalities are toxic and unpleasant. Shes young. she can turn herself into anyone she wants to be.
