Animal skins, use them or not?
A customer i had in the salon today made me think about animal skins.
She was wearing a rabbit skin scarf, i was quite horrified until she pointed out i had on leather shoes, animal skin right?.
If we eat the animal are we wasting its skin if we dont use it as well?

I think if you would use it from animals that are going to be killed for meat like cows etc then that's OK. I think it's horrible to kill and skin an animal just to use it's fur. We don't need that in this day and age where there are plenty synthetic materials to keep us warm. I would find it OK however if you were living in a very isolated and cold place and this was a means of survival.

Hi Jenny, rabbit is poular here (god i hope chonsi doesent see this)
Her point i think is valid, if we are eating animals, whats the difference between a cow & a rabbit on the food / clothing chain?

Yeah I would agree. They don't eat rabbit here anymore because they got a disease. I can't remember the name. My mom said that they used to eat rabbit all the time when they were kids and she hates it now. I saw the most awful pictures of dogs being skinned in China, it nearly broke my heart.

Yes that is disgusting gutting pics but it looks very similar to gutting a fish, no-one seems concerned about fish, if we are against animals being ate or used for clothing, shouldent it be all of them?

As a hunter, any deer that I kill I use their hide. If not for something for myself, then the hide is sold or traded to a taxidermist for his use. I've made 3 quivers from deer hide but not clothes. When I or other hunters say "Use the entire animal" we mean that quite seriously.

Jimbo, people are going to pile on me for this I'm sure, but I think just
every once in a while, there are things on here that don't deserve
crude jokes thrown in, and IMO, this is one of those times.
If I'm in the minority, or a single voice, fine, let it be ever so. But I
just had to have MY say, you all can go on about the thread.

All threads tend to go off topic & come back to the point again on the following page or page after. You never said how you felt about the subject Val, that might help

I think that if you kill it to eat, why not use the fur. When growing up we had over 500 rabbits. Some were pets, others show rabbits some for eating and the rest were for labs. Use to hate feeding and watering them all.

I don't hunt. But a hunter - most hunters I mean, there are idiots in any group - are not cruel. I know this is not about hunting per se but I'll get back there. The animal they stalk is in the wild. Guess what, it's going to die one day. It may die of disease or starvation, it may die a lingering and painful death. If it is hunted by a competent and compassionate, yes I said "compassionate" hunter then it will be a quick death.
Now, compare hunting to the way that the food industry treats animals. There is absolutely no comparison. The cruelty in the food industry is unspeakable. I've seen it, not photos, but seen it right there.
I'm not going to go on a rant. I will say that the industrialised production of food is a fact of life because there are so many of us and we don't kill our own food. We prefer the shrink wrapped product. I won't bang on about that because I don't want to be distasteful. Yes I eat meat and anyone is quite welcome to launch at me. We'll see where we go.
The industrialised production of food must be heavily regulated towards proper animal husbandry and treatment. Profit is no excuse for outright cruelty. Legislatures have to stop being duchessed by pressure groups from the food industry. I'm not holding my breath.
Jimbo, I thought for a horrible minute you were going to mention the Energiser rabbit and where the EverReady bloke told the wabbit where he could shove his battery. I 'm glad you didn't though, my eyes would have watered.
another brilliant post my friend:-6

Ok...I heard rabbits being used in labs and I have to split now or forever hold my piece. It is NEVER okay to torture an animal for human or animal gain. EVER.
