Brrrrrrr!!

Post by valerie »

Okay, for a lot of you, I know this is small potatoes, but when I left

for my walk this morning, it was 24.6F!!

And it was one of the rare times when there were NO other people out

there walking!! Kinda nice!

We've had "arctic air" come down from the north. Covered all my tender

vegetation and left a faucet dripping!!

Oh, that is chilly for you, Val! The dripping faucet won't hurt a thing, your temps won't be below freezing long enough.

No it doesn't hardly ever get that cold. (Waves to Al Gore!) The last

time we had even UPPER 20's was about 12 years ago, I think.

Chons, I left the faucet dripping just to keep pipes from freezing...

just in case. There were some reporters around here who predicted

it would be in the upper TEENS this morning.

What I really, really worry about is the poor hummers!! Those little

guys are so small!! Torpor or not, they gotta be feeling it!

Both of my birdbaths froze solid!

Yes, the hummingbirds needs their water warmed. The poor little sweeties.

Yes, you can leave the faucet to drip a little, but that is usually in places where temps stay below freezing for weeks or months. I turn off my outside water in November, but I know my neighbors do not.

I didn't know you were able to turn off just the outside... we can't here.

A lot of California crops are in danger, including oranges and artichokes!!

Artichikes! No way, they are my favorite!

Yes, we have different lines for inside and outside water. I had a man from church come out when my husband first was ill, to mark them for me. I can now do it myself every fall, and turn it back on in the spring.

Oh, the old smudge pots for the oranges!

Its so cold today and the wind cuts right thru you

There are freeze warnings for tonight and I'll need to cover everything and keep my faucet dripping slow, and keep my pool running.

Also - we were told on the outside faucets to disconnect your yard hoses.?

Its said that the extra water in the hoses will freeze and back up into your house.

I just can't move in the cold - its painful.

That weather is what's supposed to be hear beginning of next week, and we've got rain forecasted too, in all that below-freezing weather  The weather's never predictable here, but it's really been unusually cold here this winter. That being said, it was 70 today

Val, did this happen to you with your dogs? I went out to scoop poop (I lead a DAMNED GLAMOROUS LIFE) and it was absolutely CRISP! :wah:

I did a tour at the zoo today and all the primates were sitting comfortably in front of their heat lamps, while the people stood around shivering! Amusing!

What WON'T be amusing is the farmers losing crops! Sorry about those artichokes, Chonsi!

Actually, a LIGHT frost is good for artichokes, it "kisses" them and makes

them taste even better.

It's the heavy stuff that gets to the inside and freezes all the cells

that is really the problem...

And Lu, the poop around here is scooped before it has a chance

to get CRISP!!

Val

My outside faucets have ice cycles from dripping all night

my humming bird feeders are frozen solid

I live in Phoenix Arizona - it was @ 26 degrees last night and tonight will be the same. I've lived here since 1989 - never seen it this cold - ever.
