Why do men want to be gynecologists? I can't figure out, as a professional and assumedly not sexually motivated, why a man would want to spend his career looking at ....

I know this has the potential to become a nasty thread. Keep it clean. ;) I post this with an honest curiosity.

I'm more curious about his wife and home life, does wifey ask about work, what do they do for "take your kid to work day", what does junior say for "what my daddy does at work"? After a long hard day, when Doc. comes home and declares "I don't ever want to see another *****, does wifey cheer him up with a nice romantic evening? Do they see his patients socially? :-2

THAT'S what I'm talking about!

I can understand women wanting to specialize in something specific to women's bodies but...

Let me add that the worst and only painful 'exam' I have ever had was from a man who was a specialist. He spoke to me as if I was inferior and completely ignorant of my own body and I left feeling dirty like I had been assaulted/raped. I hope this was a unique experience. :(

You two are not alone!

My most painful and worst 'exam' was from a male specialist who was rude and abrupt. I was having a 'colposcopy', I didn't know what it was and he didn't bother to explain, he told me in a very strict voice that if I didn't relax he wouldn't be able to do the procedure!!!! Of course I relaxed immediately

no different than a dentist? an opening to the body where exams find disease. would a GI doctor find pleasure performing a colonoscopy on a man. we all have oricals, there is a specialists for each and every spot. i would tell the idiot take a look, get your sample and then get out.

why would pleasure be found doing that at all??

actually if a doctor found any of these types of things pleasureable i think they need to be struck of the medical practitioners list!!!

you all are def not alone in this i had a really bad exammination by a doc. was having a smear test (first time) and never been touched down there before, he got the biggest tool thingy told me to open wide and just shoved it up i was in tears (was only 13) had to have one as mum had problems down that area. my mum nearly punched him now i hate going to docs for tests like that

Guess I'm lucky after reading all these tests. I've always had female doctors for annual tests. But this past year, I had a Ob specialist who was male. He was very good, very gentle. I recommended him to anyone and everyone who would ever need a specialist.

I know this is off-topic, just wanted to say that they aren't all bad.
I probably posted that in an ambien trance-soryy

Good question Koan.. I have always wondered the same thing myself. For the most part all Doctors were men until the last 20 or 30 years when women could finally manage to get into the medical schools. I worked in a hospital starting in 1967 back then almost all Physicians were Male.. :-5 I think now you see more women in OB/GYN field than men, but still lots of men become OB/GYN'S must be a calling I guess.. :-2

LOL! In my experience as one of those who has worked and played with doc's........I can tell you for a FACT, that most ob/gyns get into that field because they REALLY love women! And they are VERY enthusiastic about their work! :wah: Yes, it's a calling. They each have individual things that draw them to each of their specialities. Psychiatrists are usually those who really dont want to be doctors at all, they just have gotten too far into their schooling to drop it. Radiologists are folks who REALLY dont like patient contact. No bedside manner WHATSOEVER! The Gastro guys are in it for the money. Cardio's and Pulmonaries are in it for the glory and the science. Those are the geeks of the field. Family practioners are the true blue dedicated doctors. ER docs are adrenalin junkies. Surgeons have a dark side. They are morbid and GROSS! They too, are in it for the money. ESPECIALLY the plastics! Pathologists are the weird ones! But they have the best sense of humor. Neuro guys, they are the most esteemed by their peers. Dont ask me why! :wah:

Well! That was very interesting! And to think that I have been lumping all doctors into one group. Duh.

LOL! For further enlightenment, I can highly recommend a book written by a doc. It's very humorous and TRUE! It's title is 'The House of God.' It's a play on the word hospital. It's ancient greek for house of god. Hospit-al. It gives you the inside mind-workings of what makes a good doctor.

Thanks for the endearing comment! My daddy is a family doctor and this describes him to the tee! As a matter of fact, after he retired he missed it so much and being around the people, that he went and got a 2 day/wk job working a very busy ER here! He just loves all the people he takes care of...truly loves them!
