Just how big is this huntsman? Just curious.

We have black widows here but they basically try to avoid people.

I get huntsmen inside the house quite often Ted. They are the size of the palm of your hand, non poisonous, but scary looking. I don't care for them inside and collect them and reintroduce them to the wild. They are not related to black widows, but our redbacks are. You can tell by the very pointy angles of their legs. Redbacks can give you a nasty painful bite but unless you are very young, very frail or allergic to the bite, they are not dangerous. You treat them with ice, not a pressure bandage and emergency call (like you'd use for a funnelweb or brown snake bite).

Looks just like my little friend Henry, who at the moment is on the outside of my window wire, kinda smiling at me. As long as he stays put, he's gonna be okay. Grin.

Human nature make's us all different, if we were all the same life would be very boring .

In my opinion the reason we have so many disagreement's here in FG is because a disagreement between two people is never left between two people . Human nature makes us want to stick up for our friends so as soon as there's the first wiff of disharmony everyone takes sides and the battle lines are drawn . And something that could be very minor ends up with a major blow out - because everyone wants to have an opinion .

I don't see a problem with people having disagreements , it's only when it becomes personal that things get out of hand . I find it quite odd that when there is a disagreement thread in process everyone piles in and tells all party's to stop bickering but all that does is bump the thread up to the front page . If we really want these sort of threads to die then shouldn't we simply ignore them . And don't forget the people who jump in just to make sarcastic comments - i have to hold my hand up here because i know i've even done it . I think secretly a lot of people enjoy them , whatever they say . And i also think some of the fueds are from way back so they'll always be around . I also find it funny than when newbie's make their intro everyone tells them how welcome they'll be made to feel - if only they new .:-5

You guys know the size of speed camera lenses.. not big. This Spidee had got onto the lens, that's all. These are non poisonous, rather friendly critters. Of course, you don't really want one crawling onto you while you're sleeping... :sneaky:

OK, MrsK - I just didn't want people to get too scared to come to Australia. The spiders really are biggish.. sort of. Big kangaroos are pretty safe, but joeys get et for brekkie....

I thought they might do nicely for target practice, Diuretic!!!

In my wicked childhood... :D ... I remember rainy afternoons where we kids would shoot rubber bands off rulers at the spidees on the ceiling. A direct hit tended to be messy... yes, I know. Not nice.. I blame ancient hunting genes...

Yes, they are big, yes they are frightening and to a poor spider phobic Pom like me it was one hell of a shock when I saw one on the bathroom wall when in Oz - hubby had to kill it quickly (we didn't know it was a 'safe' spider), I was packing and planning to leave, right then or sleep in the car!!!

Tell you what though, I'm not so scared of spiders now!

Spider's don't really bother me, unless it looks like it could chew a limb off. And that hairy beast looks like it could remove a toe or two. :-2

I see another one of those 300 foot wide Australian Venomous Instant Grisly Death Walabangaloo Spiders has gotten onto the freeway again. Well its okay because as its in Australia, they will send a bloke out with a pointy stick and some fruity comments and he will get the bugger back into the cage as usual. Amazing people the Aussies really.

True story.

My youngest daughter was an elite gymnast. Growing up in Canberra (where we don't have them), she had never seen a funnelweb spider. Forget the huntsmen, funnel webs are the spiders you really don't want to encounter. They are aggressive and they jump. The male is a bit smaller than the female and, in this case, he's the really deadly one. I grew up in Sydney and so had met these nasties..

Anyway, we were all staying down the south coast on a wet day (good spidee place, good spidee weather), and Romy was in the garage practising backflips or something when she called out to me there was a funny spider on the wall. I went to investigate and sure enough. It was a male funnel web, all reared up ready to jump. You don't get a second chance with these. I had my shoe off, and a flying leap achieved and the bugger squashed before you could say STREWTH, and then I crapped meself.

13 deaths from funnel web spider bites have been recorded in the last 100 years - hospitals in funnel web areas all stock antivenene.

I don't know how many people are fatally struck by lighning on North American golf courses each year, or get clobbered by tube trains or London buses each year but.... and Mystery - don't you have water moccasins and cotton mouths and alligators down your way????

Yes, yes we all know that really Australian animals are all fluffy things that just squeak, that it never gets above 12 degrees Celsius, that the great barrier reef is really only about 46 feet long, and that you make all that stuff up about having to wrestle crocs before teatime to make yourselves look cool.

But you really should have mentioned the 300 foot long spiders before now, its not fair.

We sure do, and I stay far far away from them too. Moccasins and cotton mouths are more common than alligators, although you do see them occasionally. Funnily enough though, I'm far more afraid of spiders than I am snakes. I suppose it's cause I can see them coming more quickly? :o

Stone the Bleedin Crows, Cobbers - we aussies barstids are really just a bunch of micks deep down. Scratch a kangarooster and you'll get a face fulla shamrocks. Or a cup of English barmy army tea. Capeesh. Oh, okay, we've got Eye-talian blood somewhere in there too. And don't forget the Greeks and Germans and Chinese and all them folk in Lakemba in Sinney too. One generation on vegemite and we're all true blue, fair dinkum, dingo-hugging, funnelweb-wrestling, croc barbeeing DownUndersiders. Sorry, what was the question again??? Was there a question? Hic... Pass the Guinness!!!

PS Galbers - Actually, I'm wrassling the Irish Tourism lot at the moment - who are apparently of the view that the rural areas in your country's west are most perilous and that it would be unseemly for a lady to walk there, unescorted. Maybe they've never met any Aussies before...:D I am very sorry to say, I responded to them in reasonably direct Irish and possibly they are now aghast, appalled and flabberghasted. I hope so anyway :sneaky:
