The President should not debate Kerry
Senator Kerrry has access to secrets that could be harmful to our troops and the war if revealed. He has a history of revealing secrets as he did again, just this last week. If the President gets him in a corner, Kerry will use whatever he knows to get himself out...even if it means revealing more sensitive information. Kerry has proven in the past that our having troops in harms way won't stop him. The President should avoid putting Kerry in a high pressure situation where he may lose control of his tongue.

I too want to see debates. They are the only opportunity we have to stand them side by side and compare. Maybe they shoud be done with a time delay so Loose Lips kerry can't sink the ship.

I think we have a lot more to worry about if Kerry lacks the discipline to keep sensitive information to himself.
I doubt he'll do what you are worried about though. The consequences are too great.

Kerry has now made it known that he will focus on Iraq until the election. He is doing with Iraq, the same thing he did with Vietnam. He assumes both wars are the same. His M.O. now is to demorilize the citizenry and the troops just like he did with Vietnam. Vietnam may have been wrong but so were Kerry's tactics. Today, he is capitalizing on any negative he can find in the Iraq situation. You can rest assured that givin a forum with as many people listening as there will be when he debates the President, he will pull out all the stops. If he has sensitive information he will use it then just like he always has.

Yes, good analysis. I am looking forward to the debates. I can't wait to hear what Kerry's policies will be. (At least for this week.)
It's easy to criticize. Let's see if he can rise above it.

Damn rights we're entitled to a debate....and no, none of this "time delay" ****....real time only.
I'm so frickin tired of wondering what i'm seeing has been edited or not and where.
Personally, i think the both of them are dummies...but it comes down to the lesser of two evils. IMO i believe gore and clinton offered more intellect then either bush, or kerry.
I believe bush has a strong business sense...be it a derivitive of greed, or whatever.....as far as i can tell , Kerry is just another guy who figures he knows enough about how to "yap" the political talk.
I wish i knew what matters most...and that's the truth.....but you never will at the ranks we common peasants reside at, and that's why you'll never make the difference.
It's not negative thinking...it's realistic thinking.
Honest to godly....like what major -big time business owners are goin to stand by and let society's ****-up's -> the welfarer's , the working stiffs, the lower middle class, dictate the economic future of which profits and therefore , jobs are to be had? Really.
just my 2 cents
It's the same thing, here in canada. We've got this fella "Paul Martin", and although these guys all have their own agenda, i feel just that little bit more safer knowing that one of the world's richest shipping magnates, and therefore business master is at the helm of the country's finances then that silly frog from quebec....or anyone else for that matter.

I agree that President Bush has good business sense. I’m really not a great fan of his though. I disagree on Kerry. He isn’t as benign as you indicate. Kerry has a destructive, demoralizing core that comes to the surface in his speeches. He is demoralizing the electorate and worse than that, our troops while they are facing the enemy. If he can spread as much black paint as he does now, what would he be like if he had the presidential bully pulpit? I’m all for free speech but what Kerry is doing is akin to yelling fire in a theater.

I also feel Bush is experienced to continue another term, although i am not completely consumed in politics, i am old enough to make an assumption just from what i hear and see, which is not alot, about who should be the next Pres..,For Kerry to enter the scene now, is not a good idea, in my opinion...he acts too over-confident, i would rate his debate with Bush as a D+. Bush i would have to say was mentally absent...

How many people had heard about the bunker busting nuclear warheads before the debate? I think Kerry did exactly what I was concerned he would do. He talked about our developing weapons, and not only that, he deplored them being developed. That debate was televised worldwide. He said if others couldn’t develop them, then we shouldn’t. If he gets elected, our sovereignty will only exist in history books (if they haven’t been edited by the NEA).

well there you go, Kerry has no idea about war, Bush was probably tired that night? I just know in my gut, comments on behalf of Kerry shows he is unqualified in all (areas) of leadership, the ones who vote for him must believe in Santa, there will be no presents from him, our wallets and freedom will be at serious risk...

Firstly Kerry actually went to war, from all accounts Bush avoided going, personally someone who has been to war is far more entitled to make comment than someone who avoided going. In the UK the sheer hypocrisy would be enough to lose him votes-your country needs you, you go I'll stay home and take notes.
Iraq is similar to vietnam in that arguably you shouldn't be there, the wrong war, you were misled by your leaders and anyone criticising was dismissed as unpatriotic, the hatred heaped on protestors during vietnam was incredible it's only years later people acknowledge they were right. At least this time your national guard hasn't opened fire on demonstartors. Getting out is going to be incredibly difficult.

If you think that kind of stuff is secret you are kidding yourself. It is also no use in a war against terrorism.
Incidentally the British developed bunker busting bombs in WW2 called big boys, weapons that fell at supersonic speeds with enough force toi penetrate deep in to the earth that's how they took out the U.boat pens and destroyed the V1 & V2 bunkers. The explosive is irrelevant inless you can actually penetrate to th heart of the bunker.
One of the concerns the british military have in Iraq is that heavy handed american tactics are making things worse and they are now being attacked in Basra as a result. Rather than stand off and bomb fallujah killing dozens of innocent people in the process you need to go in house by house and winkle them out. But the american casualties would be very high if you did that. Iraq was a convenient target that nothing to do with 911, now you are involved in a long drawn out war and opened a pandora's box that you can't shut.
I agree that President Bush has good business sense.
What business has he been successful in? My understanding is that without his father to bail him out he was a dismal failure.
Come to that what has kerry done?

i don't care if any-one has been to war or not, who is leading the USA today should continue, in times of turmoil we don't need a new person to come in and make a stupid mistake, the Bush family are experienced like the Kennedys, i am not in-depth about Iraq and politics etc., i don't know or really (care) about all the details, to be american is to think american, leave George Bush as President...for now...Kerry speaks loud and strong, i'm not impressed, he is a weakling.

Firstly does ot not bother you that someone who avoided going to war when his turn for the draft came up should now lead you to war?
Why do you think going in to Iraq was a good idea and not a stupid mistake? Iraq had no connection to 911, all the evidence points to Saudi Arabia, Bush seems to have ignored all the evidence and used it as an excuse to go after Iraq. many warned that such an action would create more terrorists than otherwise and destabalise the whole middle east. You can't impose democracy it has to come from within, the whole idea is an oxymoron.
i don't know or really (care) about all the details, to be american is to think american,
What on earth does that mean? I always thought being american meant you didn't follow blindly but felt free to criticise your government when you thought they were wrong and call them to account. You are a democracy since when did that mean you just accept what you are told and follow the leader because he is the leader?
the Bush family are experienced like the Kennedys,
What's that got to do with it? they are not royalty. (you can have ours if you like)
Unilatral warfare by one state on another was one of the reasons the UN was formed america has just set a dangerous precedent by making pre emptive warfare acceptable.

Mr. Bush served in the United States Air National Guard. Now, if you wish to besmirch and dismiss all the patriotic americans who served honorably in our National Guard as having 'avoided going to war', that's your affair. But it's not a reasonable argument. The brits apparently loved former president Bill Clinton, who really did 'avoid going to war'. it apparently didn't bother anyone that Mr. Clinton pointedly avoided going to war as a young man, yet led several military invasions during his tenure as president.
this whole diversion of military service is a bunch of hogwash ultimately.
William H. Taft no military service
Woodrow Wilson no military service (president during WWI)
Warren G. Harding no military service
Calvin Coolidge no military service
Herbert Hoover no military service
Franklin Roosevelt no military service (president during WWII)
Harry Truman served in Missouri National Guard (president during WWII)
Dwight Eisenhower served in the Army
John F. Kennedy served in the Navy (president during vietnam war)
Lyndon Johnson served in the Navy (president during vietnam war)
Richard Nixon served in the Navy (president during vietnam war)
Gerald Ford served in the Navy
Jimmy Carter served in the Navy
Ronald Reagan served in the Army and Air Force
George H. Bush served in the Navy
Bill Clinton no military service
George W. Bush served in Air National Guard
so what does it all mean? the two presidents who presided over World Wars I and II had no military service. so i guess they were draft dodgers and shouldn't have been president!

Like I said at the beginning I'm not trying to antagonise anyone.
I am only going on something that seems to be an issue. It has been mooted that Bush went in to the national guard to avoid going to vietnam, whether he did or not I don't know, on the other kerry did go so to say he knows nothing about war seems a bit odd. If Bush did use influence to get in to the national guard and avoid vietnam then it is a serious alegation if true is it not?
Bill clinton seems to have been fairly open about avoiding vietnam, most people in the UK don't blame him. We like him because he actually did something to stop noraid funding the IRA and bring the two sides together which has helped towards the present peace talks in Ireland. At some point you have to talk to terrorists, we did in Ireland, the south africans did as well. Both situations seemed insoluble. whether iraq is? personally I have no solutions but i don't think much of the present approach.
Most of the post war presidents are of an age to have fought in WW2 so it would have been odd if they hadn't. Did you have a draft between the wars? I know we didn't.
I wasn't besmirching anyone I was curious as to what you thought about it. Most of the bits and pieces I look at on american sites seem to be highly polarised with little common ground. One of the appeals of this forum was the chance to talk to normal americans about things like this. (can I use normal and american in the same sentence?

my only point is that there is no point to the whole 'who served/didn't serve' thirty years ago.
woodrow wilson was president during world war I, and never served in the military. franklin roosevelt was president during world war II, and never served in the military. but nobody questioned their ability to lead the country in wartime.
it should be noted though, as a matter of accuracy, that *every* US president has served in the military: the president is the Commander in Chief of all US military forces. He therefore serves in the military as president.
i'm far more interested in what the candidates plan to do in office. i don't care about kerry's history in vietnam, or bush's history in the air nat'l guard. i just don't care. it's irrelevant. 100%, completely, totally, irrelevant to who should be president, and at least for me makes absolutely no difference to how i'll vote.

Anastrophe,
I agree totally. Kerry has tried to make this about his military service of 34 years ago. In the process of trying to put the focus on his military service Kerry has called into question the President’s service (see the latest smear ad Kerry has approved) saying he didn’t serve honorably.
I, for one, am sick of hearing people bash National Guard service. Suppose George Bush and many friends of yours and mine, avoided military service altogether. Suppose there wasn’t a National Guard because no one would serve. The National Guard is an important part of our National Defense, our homeland security and disaster preparedness. We should honor those who serve their country without equivocation. When I was in Vietnam it was comforting to know people were keeping things safe back home.
Kerry keeps focusing on Vietnam and making comparisons between his service and the Presidents. The only reason I can imagine him doing it for, would be create a red herring. He doesn’t want his Senate record examined and he certainly doesn’t want his intentions for the future to be known.

Wev'e got the same problem as well. TB has been caught out telling porkies at worst or being grossly incompetent at best yet it' almost as if no politician can admit they were wrong or at least apologise. What is really depressing is that the back benchers all toe the party line because they want ot stay in power. We are not supposed to have a presidential style of government, yet we are getting it almost by default because the PM has too much power because he gets away with it. Less than half the people vote because it seems to make little difference, which is a self fulfilling prophecy if ever there was one.
The don't criticise because it's unpatriotic doesn't work as well as it seems to in america, the usual response is more a F*&^% O99 it's a free country I'll say what I like.
At least you took my crack about normal americans the way it was intended. It's perhaps a sign of the times that you feel obliged to put in a big grin to ensure people realise it's meant as a joke.

contrary to what the scare-mongers claim, it doesnt work here at all. There is no shortage of free and open discourse and criticism of the country, and of politicians. Forumgarden is hosted in the United States. I have yet to see any government censorship of anything posted here. people love to *say* that you shouldn't criticize because it's unpatriotic. the fact that they say that is evidence that we're still very, very free.
back when i was in college, the RCYB (Revolutionary Communist Youth Brigade) would sometimes put on some 'street theatre' on campus. Highly unpopular stuff, to say the least. I was always amused by the hardheads who would show up and try to drown them out, by shouting "you wouldn't be able to do this if this were a communist country!" or contrarily "you're only able to do this because your in free america!". which is quite true - but the irony of them trying to keep the poor misguided dears from being heard is rich.

back when i was in college, the RCYB (Revolutionary Communist Youth Brigade) would sometimes put on some 'street theatre' on campus. Highly unpopular stuff, to say the least. I was always amused by the hardheads who would show up and try to drown them out, by shouting "you wouldn't be able to do this if this were a communist country!" or contrarily "you're only able to do this because your in free america!". which is quite true - but the irony of them trying to keep the poor misguided dears from being heard is rich.

contrary to what the scare-mongers claim, it doesnt work here at all. There is no shortage of free and open discourse and criticism of the country,
Pleased to hear it. You kind of get the impression that american political debate has degenerated to yaboo politics with the real power being with powerful interest groups, except ultimately the people do decide so that image never seemed quite right. Nobody seemed to question whether going in to iraq was the right thing to do the impression seemed to be that, in american politics, nobody wanted to speak out for fear of being unamerican as if you should all follow blindly without question what you are told.

i don't know how anyone would get that impression. there was massive press coverage of the peace demonstrations that took place before the war, and the criticism of the war has been ongoing and vocal.

The only american media I see is on the web, CNN and CBS on cable, david letterman and J leno, hardly a comrehensive survey. Bouncing between michael moore and project for the new american century web sites does distort things a little. When i first saw comments about the pnac I thought it was one of these daft conspiracy theories.
Same here, the anti war demonstrations were the largest our country has seen for years when bush was here they blocked off the streets to keep demonstrators away from him which didn't exactly go down well since our right to protest is almost a sacred institution.
I have an impression that local democracy is more active than ours but at a national level a lot of people are disenfranchised. Our local democracy is livening up now, We have PR in the scottish parliament which hopefully will loosen things up a bit and break the labour mafia monopoly as they can no longer blame central government. The devious self serving lying scum are more visible. (politician is a much hander description is it not?)

Don't think you did either, Were you trying to? If you can't poke fun at cultural differences why have them?
Personally I am just trying to cope with the image of americans standing around obsessing about their underwear getting bunched to the extent they have a term for it. Strange but true.

I don’t know what I was thinking when I started this tread. Kerry couldn’t do much more harm to the troops than he is already doing. He is back to his post Vietnam M.O. He is fueling our enemy’s hopes and demoralizing our troops with his comments. His political ambitions are always first in his mind. I wonder if we will find out that he is negotiating with the enemy again, like he did when he got back from Vietnam?

The photo here of John Kerry-Botox, i wished some-one during this weekend debate, had showed Kerry the photo, and as the question? John what is this about & explain the hair, & his relationship with his wife? wouldn't that have been funny? Bush acted as a leader, did a great job, imo, Kerry is narcisstic, defensive & a smart ass. I hope he is defeated by Bush, yes! :wah:
oh you don't like my picture? it reminds me of my brother. :wah: :wah:

I like your question. This campaign is in dire need of a good laugh. If Kerry’s mask came of the whole country would be rolling with laughter.
