My guesses:



The baby died and the griefstricken parents couldn't bear to bury it.



It was born to an unmarried girl and in the 1950s suffocating moral clime, she was alone and afraid and thought she'd get caught so she covered it up the best way her traumatized mind would let her.



I read about this earlier and for some reason it just doesn't seem like foul play to me.
