What are some of your family traditions??

What kind of things did you do as a family while you were growing up... any special traditions you did/do year after year together?

Do you still carry out any of these traditions with your own family (if you have one) or on your own (if you are single, but no longer live at home, etc) ??

If so .. why are they important to you?

Please share! :)

My parents had the dumbest Christmas tree topper EVER. We called it the red soldier. I still don't know what it was, really. They decided that we should all have a similar dumb ornament to top our own family trees and distributed them last year. I'm sorry to say mine broke on the plane ride home. ;)

We always saw a pantomine on Christmas Eve. On the way home we stopped at the shop, got loads of munchies and pop and stayed up a bit later than usual. When my niece is old enough to enjoy them I'm taking her too! :guitarist

Lets see...Christmas was the big one. On C-mas eve, we would go to one grandparents house for chili and presents. On C-day, it was my other grandparents house for breakfast and presents. Changing the time or activity was unthinkable....if you couldn't make it because of work, you missed out (but got your presents later). My parents just pick a night around C-mas for us all to get-together because they feel its more important for us all to be together than when we actually do. I will continue this when my kids are adults. As kids, Santa always left the best gifts and the rule was to wake mom and dad up before going downstairs. I was 6 years older than my sister and when I got old enough, I got to be Santa by helping arrange presents under the tree.

Thanksgiving was a big dinner (actually lunch, we always met at 1 pm) at grandparents house. Again, if you had to work, you missed out but could usually get some leftovers. When my kids are adults, I'll hope to have a dinner during the 4 days of the T-giving holiday, around their life.

Easter was always fun.....The night before, our parents had us put out little green nests all over the house....hidden for the Easter bunny to find. The next morning, we would go around and find all the goodies the Easter bunny left us. Then we would go over to my grandparents for yet another lunch (usually the same stuff as T-giving dinner) along with more Easter egg hunts.

I will do the "hide your nest" thing when my kids start doing that. It was always fun.

Halloween....get a costume and a big grocery bag and clean up with as much sugar as possible, hitting every house in our small town. I won't be doing that with my kids....just a few places that I trust. She'll have a costume, but we will do parties or hit houses that I know I can trust. Too many bad guys out there now.

Valentines Day.....Dad always got my sister and I a box of chocolates and a card.

Birthdays....we got to pick what we wanted to do. I'll continue this with my kids.

July 4th......a BBQ and lots of fireworks. I'll continue that one too.

Wow, I wrote a novel.....guess we have quite a few.
I probably posted that in an ambien trance-soryy
