I agree, my son was recently diagnosed with Aspergers, his doctor wanted him to go on a similar drug to Ritalin, I said NO WAY, you've only got to do a quick Google on those drugs to see what they do these children and there is no hard evidence that it actually helps in most cases.

In one of the first psych classes I took in college, several years ago, I had to do a research assignment/paper on this and the types of drugs used to treat ADHD. Some of what I found is frightening. I wish I still had that paper, so I could review it and compare that data with some of the new research being done today. This disorder IMHO is exceedingly over-diagnosed, and too often drug therapies are suggested without even trying others. Sad.

When my son was younger he was diagnosed as having ADHD, it was recommended that he go on Ritalin, i declined the recommendation and put him in a private nursery to get rid of some excess energy. As he has got older he is fine, at times he can get like a caged animal but on the whole as long as he goes to school and does sports, most days he is good.
I have a friend who's son has been put on ritalin and it really was the best thing for not only him but the whole family. He was constantly picking on his siblings, would only sleep at the most 4 hours a night, the house was like a war zone, and he really was a danger to himself often doing stupid stunts. He was being excluded from normal classes and their was talk of him moving to a school 65 miles away which would of meant him boarding there. Since being on the tablets he really is like a different little boy, who seems much happier in himself.
What might be right for one child is not necessarily right for others, but these tablets are like a god send for some.

That's the key though IMO. For those that truly do need these meds, they're effective, but they're prescribed too often in situations where other options, just like what you chose, are sufficient.

IMO Looking back on it I don't think my son had ADHD at all, I think it was a case of him being very bright and needing more stimulation than I alone was able to give him. His school was very understanding and Sam started working on scientific maths when he was 7, from then on I haven't been able to help him with his homework!

LMAO @ the homework, that's a dilemma I'll end up having with my son :wah:
What you're talking about is what I was originally referring to. Seems many doctors give these diagnoses far too quickly, without enough background/testing to get a good hold on the criteria, and that concerns me.
