Hagg-er-ling!

I went into PCWorld today to look at a laptop cooler, i asked the assistant how much and he said £19.99, i took it to the checkout and they charged me £24.99.

I came home and told my niece and she took it back to the store got a huge apology and £5.00.

I was thinking later how much of a wimp i am, how i hate confrontation and always shy away when i should haggle in shops etc.

I remember a couple of year ago i did a carboot sale, the following is the conversation i had...

cust: "How much for these" ( an unworn boxed pair of nikes)

me: £5.00

cust: "i'll give you £3.50"

me:"No, they're a fiver"

we went back and forth, she was really pissing me off.

cust number 2:"how much for the trainers"

me:£5.00

cust 2" i'll have them please"

me:" you can have them for £3.50"

The woman could'nt believe her luck gave me the money and went off with a spring in her step.

What made me feel really good was the look on the womans face that was trying to haggle with me. :sneaky:

Am i alone in being unable to haggle with people or dont like being haggled with, or am i just a funny bunny?

My favorite little bunnies!

It is hard to haggle in the modern world, I love going to Mexico and having a good haggling session for something cool.

Can you haggle with prices there, abbey?

They seem to be set here, it's kind of a no-no thing to do.

I've read articles in the media and also seen tv programes where reporters go into high street stores and get huge discounts just by being cheeky.

I suppose they're all vying for business and a cut in profit is better than none.

My husband is a good haggler. He went to Office Depot yesterday to buy a memory stick for the computer..they had some on sale for $17.95. Turns out it was after rebated and a few other hoops the cust. needed to jump through. He talked with the manager, said he hated rebates and all. Mgr sold him another stick, regular $25 for the $17.95 sale price. Just to keep him as a customer.

This was my first attempt at haggling. How bad was I? Well....

My cousin took me into an antique store she visited often and I found some old rings there I wanted. So I take my rings up to the lady and I whip out my money and fan it all out in my hands and ask the woman "what's the best price you could give me?"

What a dumbass!!

:wah: My cousin yanked me aside and explained the error of my way.

To be fair now, my husband had just left me and my mind was mush but I still get embarrassed thinking about that.

I've gotten much better since that time.

Oh man I suck at this. I walk into a store with the assumption Im going to get ripped off so I probably have an edge which isnt nessacary/necessary :-5. Im finding the internet helps. If I do a little research beforehand a little knowledge is usually all I need sans the attitude. Car shopping is a whole different can of worms. Heres a link to an interesting story about a writer that went undercover as a car salesman for 3 weeks.

I mastered my haggling skills whilst backpacking through Bali in the mid 90's. At first I felt bad as the locals are obviously not what you would call financially well off, but after being constantly hunted down by street vendors and seeing other people walking up paying full asking price for things with no attempt to haggle for it, I took it upon myself to become the most hard hitting haggler the locals had ever seen. After a few weeks I gained a reputation and some of the locals started pointing me out to their mates saying 'oh he hard man he hard man too much haggle' much to my amusement! Ive taken those skills with me throughout the world and have scored many a bargain!!!
