Can you believe this!

Post by Tater Tazz »

Went to get my daughter at school today, and a mother waiting to get her child was drunk. So, a man by me asked what he thought we should do. I told him to go in the office and let them know. She was driving on a flat and her car was smashed in the front. I just can not believe that a mother would attempt to pick up her child like that. I have had days were I feel like drinking, but I do not. I just think of my baby and I get much better. The thing is I normally talk to this lady and she is a nice person. I hope she will be okay. Would any of you had done anything differently?

I really hope the school called the police. The principal did take the mom into the office.

You did the right thing, the child must come first-even if the mother in her state was not capable of thinking this.

If the mother has shown no previous symptoms then one wonders what shock / disaster caused the lapse and if, indeed, it was a total one off rather than a regular condition.

That was ths right thing for the principal to do, "if" this was the first time occurance for the woman. Maybe something bad happened, so she had a few just to cope with it for for that one time. Getting the police involved would complicate matters. Most likely they would have arrested her, & they would also get CPSD involved. And at that point the woman would loose her child, for a one time mistake. If the woman habitually showed up drunk many times, well then all bets are off!

I would have personally confronted them, and would have given them a couple of alternatives

1) I would drive her and her child home

2) If 1 wasn't acceptable, then she would have remained there on citizens arrest until the police shown up.

This is exactly what I would have done. She had to be stopped from driving.

There was that exact story on the news last week - the school called the Police, the mother was arrested.

The whole situation is sad.

It is very sad, but even if she'd taken her child home in a taxi she would still have been drunk in charge of a child and might have carried on drinking once she got home. The child could so easily burn or scald herself trying to do something she wasn't quite able to do and she'd have had to bear the brunt of her mother's drink-fuelled anger or depression later on. It's a terrible situation but you do have to think of the rights and needs of the young child and also, as Pinky said, all the other road users.

Here is update. She was arressted, apperently she hit someone and left the accident. She made the news and the paper. I do feel bad for her in a way, because they are making a example out of her, but she had no right doing this.
