What It Tastes Like

Post by Nomad »

What it is: Grasshoppers

What it tastes like: Crunchy on the outside, slimy on the inside, bitter all around.

Where to get it: A low meadow near you

What to pair it with: Horchata

What it is: Egg-and-bacon ice cream

What it tastes like: Very cold French toast, with a bit of honey thrown in.

Where to get it: The Fat Duck restaurant in Bray, England

What to pair it with: OJ, obviously

What it is: Whale meat

What it tastes like: Chews like sirloin. Tastes like liver. (Tip: Sauté with butter, parsley, and onions.)

Where to get it: Japan or Norway

What to pair it with: Aquavit

What it is: Sparrow's-nest soup (made from the saliva of sparrows in their nests)

What it tastes like: Salty and thick because, well, it's spit. No woody taste, despite its origin in the nest.

Where to get it: Double Eight Palace in New York's Chinatown, or Chow Chung restaurant in Hong Kong

What to pair it with: Tsingtao

What it is: $2,200 cocktail (Cristal rosé champagne, Hardy Perfection cognac, Grand Marnier Cuvée du Cent Cinquantenaire, and raspberries)

What it tastes like: Complex, nose-stinging, and strong as hell. The cognac overpowers at first, then gives way to the GM and fruit.

Where to get it: Teatro Euro Bar at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, next to the lingerie-clad go-go dancer

What to pair it with: A Schlitz chaser

What it is: Crocodile

What it tastes like: The old standby: chicken. Partly because the crocs are fed chickens every day.

Where to get it: Go to the source—Koorana Crocodile Farm in Queensland, Australia

What to pair it with: Bundaberg Australian rum

What it is: Raw habanero peppers (among the hottest variety of peppers)

What it tastes like: A volcanic eruption. Some claim there's an apricot flavor, but we were too busy sweating to notice.

Where to get it: Specialty food stores

What to pair it with: Lots of vanilla yogurt or milk

What it is: Rattlesnake

What it tastes like: Mild and a little oily, like duck, with a stringy texture.

Where to get it: Hudson's on the Bend in Austin

What to pair it with: Patrón Silver tequila

You left out the Witchetty Grub, Nomie.

http://www.pilotguides.com/destination_ ... y_grub.php

Witchetty grubs are traditionally eaten live and raw. Their meat is rich in protein and makes for a highly nutritious snack if you’re tramping through the bush. Raw witchetties have a subtle, slightly sweet flavour and a liquid centre.

Barbecued, witchetties are often eaten as an appetizer. They are cooked over a fire on pieces of wire, rather like shasliks or satays. It takes about two minutes each side for the meat to become white and chewy and the skin crusty. Barbecued witchetties taste quite like chicken or prawns with peanut sauce.

We have an alligator farm in my county where they raise alligators to . . . well, to eat.

And we have a restaurant here called "Gators" where you can eat gator meat. Clever name, huh? :p

Never wanted to try it or anything else weird. Since most of it tastes like chicken, I think I'll stick to chicken :D
When choosing between two evils, I always like to take the one I've never tried before.

Alligator is actually quite delicious, as long as it's not cooked too long and it's warm. Reheated alligator - not so good. Shark is good as well.
