He was a Lagger in Devonport Dockyard, he used to come home from work and cuddle his daughter who was two years old, she breathed the asbestos in from his clothing and now it has cost her her life.
There will be a lot of worried ex dockyardies and their children about right now, the doctor being interviewed stated this is not the first case he has come across like this and he expects it to rise and peak in about 15 years.
There is no cure for this disease.
I never realised you could catch this disease in this manner. How tragic.
I've read about this a couple of times...It's quite alarming.

The dangers from Asbestos.
i was a lagger from 1967 till 1972,each day i bent into a drum of asbestos to mix it up by hand,so far ime still clear,i thought once 30 years passed i was safe ,but my bro in law was diagnosed after 40 years!altho theres no cure unless surgery is an option,it is sometimes managable, his is called peripheral meaning confind to hardening of the out side edges, alth debilatating it isnt going to kill him ,so dont all dispair, its not 100%certain to be fatal.

My nan and stepgrandad had it in their house, my nan died from it a couple of years ago, it was awful watching her suffer on oxygen. She even had to sleep sitting up and went from a healthy big woman to skin and bones.

tis nasty stuff
I worked for about a year in a building loaded with it, after a trip to the Dr. he said flat out... leave your job... it was nasty stuff, headaches, chronic cold like symptoms that led to some serious allergy issues... yes IT IS BAD STUFF.

please dont panic!a building may have plenty in its construction but its only dangerous if it gets disturbed,ie during its removal in which case the area will be quarentined ,if it should suffer damage again the area must be fenced off whilst it is repaired.

Anything mineral and stone-like which lodges as dust inside lungs stays there. Asbestos is nastier because it generates cancers. I have trouble enough walking past building sites with the wind blowing up dust, how anyone manages to work shifts in that sort of environment I've no idea. I often see people with angle-grinders cutting stone or brick, surrounded by thick clouds of the dust they're generating, or even sandblasting, and rarely wearing any sort of mask protection. It seems like madness. At least there's not a million miners still down the coal and slate mines in Britain.
The only time I had anything to do with asbestos sheet was when I built a desktop furnace once and I had to saw it all to shape. No advice from the research lab I was working for, not even a label on the sheeting telling me of the dangers. It's all slapdash and potentially lethal eventually even when it has no effect for half a lifetime.

I used to be a fed asbestos inspector. It has been banned in the US since 1983. I have asbestos in my 120 year old house........it's OK as long as I have the floors taken up in plank floors it is embedded in------non-friable.
I'm sorry I am not more compassionate. It has come at a great cost not only to the people who worked with it in spray form but has trickled down to non-toxic forms and a very scared society which costs homeowners tons of money.

An Australian company was dragged to its knees a while ago about this very issue, its still going on today, check this link out if you're interested. Once upon a time nearly ever house in southern Australia were built almost entirely with asbestos covered materials, the govt today is still in the process of replacing roofs in public schools throughout the country.
