Hmmm i dont really think fg is a representation of the us & uk, its a representation of the type of people who take part in forums.
I think the reason why people may not have responded to previous threads of this nature is they are political & most of us dont have enough information or knowledge of the subject to put forward. Good topic tho Nov, thanks :-6

It(UK) was placed in the middle third of the table for health and safety.
A spokesman for the UK government said its initiatives in areas such as poverty, pregnancy rates, teenage smoking, drinking and risky sexual behaviour had helped improve children's welfare.
Welfare Reform Minister Jim Murphy said the Unicef study was an "historic" report, which used some data which was now out of date.
"It looks at some information and analysis from perhaps six, seven, eight years ago," he told the BBC's Newsnight. "Some of the information really is out of date in that sense.
"If you look at the teenage pregnancies issue, for example, we're now 20 years low on teenage pregnancy levels, and on homelessness as well there's been real progress there as well - a 25-year low in terms of new homelessness, so there's an awful lot we have achieved."
Are you the kind of "the glass is half empty" sort of person?

That only shows what the governments are doing for children, not the parents. I'd bet folding money that if you did a study on how well families are doing, and what parents are doing for their children, that list would be flipped upside down.
It's not the government's business to take care of the children. Where children are concerned, it's the government's job to get out of the parents' way and keep taxes low enough so that they can take care of the kids.

having spent a lot of time in the states and of course living here , compared to our earopean neighbours our children are not so much part of the family , they start going out in little gangs at an early age , and really dont have the same respect for the parents that say our french kids do for theirs , our children do seem much more unhappy with their lot in life
i do realise after reading the thread title again my post really has nothing to do with it but i've written it now , so you had better read it anyway

Its my experience that Children in Ireland have generally a better life than in Britain, but thats mostly because many Irish children do not live in urban centres as much as is the case in Britain, and much of this has got to do with urban issues such as crime, isolation, drug taking, not really about government intervention (accountable, you are wrong, people in Europe do actually love their children and look after them alright without running to the "government" all the time get off your high horse about "socialism" as usual there buddy, thanks). I would say that in general the quality of life in a country like France or Sweden is very good compared to the U.K. or even Ireland in terms of provision, cultural attitudes to the family, crime, etc etc, but all countries have issues, so nowhere is perfect. As for the U.S. I have no experience of the place, so I can't make any well-judged comment. Interesting though.

The education and the welfare of people in this country are let down , all we are to this government are like little piggy banks , and get nothing back from all that tax we pay .
I want to see more sports in school , I'd like my children to have warm dinners at school , I could go on and on
I mean what is going on here ! wheres all that money ? We have the highest TAX I think and maybe higher then most countries , and they are doing better then us here in the UK .
And what about all the OAPS who have payed many a years TAX and don't even get the care they deserve , no wonder people are moving aboard every five minutes .
It makes me so angry

To be honest I don't see a problem here in the states no...especially when it comes to family values...
Obviously the only thing I have to go by in regards to the UK is in how close this so called sufficient analysis of a poll is to that of the US...I see know problem here.
Anyone can get a job at anytime here, and upon any question of that one of many things have been exhausted
1) They're too lazy to get a job
2) There are no jobs locally...(Move)
3) They are extremely incompetent, and upon anyone not having the ability to flip burgers will be taken care of through public welfare.
"Well being of children"?
If you ask me, we're too over protective when it comes to the well being of children...

For the UK, the HBSC survey is taken from responses of residents of England only. Unicef also said some PISA indicators for the UK should be treated with caution because of low sample response rates.
I noticed the above statement but to be quite honest, you only have to pick up the paper to see that their is some truth in the report.
IMO I think we do as a nation fail our children, i try my best to give my children the emotional, financial and structured life that I believe they deserve, but i'm only too aware that I have failed on all three at some point in their lives.

The problem there is they know no different, the lack of food and education is terrible for the people, but I think what Novelty was trying to say was for a civilised country, we are failing.

I know that and I don't think it was a personal attack on any parent.
We go to Cyprus every year and have been going for the last 20 years, I love the way they are with the whole family, Grandparents are still living in a unit with their children and Grandchilden, children are treated so well there, I love the whole community living as well, everyone knowing everyone, and people taking the time to help others and not just themselves. The problem here is everyone is out for themselves without giving a 5hit who gets hurt or trampled on along the way. I think we coud learn a lot from other cultures which would help our nation 'parent'.

Yeah some are great, they are very close. I'm close with my family. I don't understand though why certain races all want to live together when they become adults. I know my old neighbours did and all moved to be next door to each other. They see it I guess as looking out for one another but I'd prefer having more independence and freedom. My family and I are very close and always there for each other but living next door, I think I'd go nuts!

I was not in the least bit surprised by the outcome of this poll as I constantly struggle with this issue. I dont go out of my way to stick up for govt and its policies, but I want someone to explain to me why they think the govt or any govt body for that matter should be responsible for the upbringing and welfare of family and children? What can the govt do to stop parents from living in the pub, buying smokes/drugs, feeding their children ridiculous food, not guiding their education properly I mean the list goes on and on!
Every single day we are flooded with advice lines, health advertisements, charity organisations, govt initiatives etc which all warn us and provide basic, simple choices to not only improve our lifestyles and our families but also our communities, local business and bigger issues like the NHS crisis, waiting lists etc. but even with all this knowledge and advice we still have children running the streets, we still have people living in pubs, drinking, gambling smoking, over eating, living off beneifts and demanding more support from the govt! I mean when are we going to stop expecting the govt to raise our families and start accepting the responsibilities as adults and focus on our own backyards. All we do is complain about not getting support for this, not getting money for that, not getting a discount for this reason its bloody pathetic wake up to yourselves put that pint/bong/smoke/packet of crisps down and get over yourselves, its absolutley terrifying to see how the kids of today who are supposed to be the next generation treat their parents, peers, their friends and the community in which they live in, something has gone terribly wrong in the last 10 years and its got sweet FA to do with the govt. There is nothing worse then a parent who wont accept their responsibilities and admit their mistakes and more importantly their kids mistakes its just a shame the rest of the community has to put up with these bastard kids and ther ignorant families.

I think the point is that the state often trys to intervene by trying to inject some common sense into irresponsible parents before it has to intervene by sending their children to prison, its cheaper init. Of course the ideal would be that people would not be idiots when being parents, but they often are, and its not just about being poor, rich people are also quite capable of ruining their children and often do, however their waster children are able to scrounge off their rich parents, and don't have to rob people normally for their drugs, so they don't go to jail. OK, now off you go and rant about "mad socialism" and its ills.

But why do the people of this country NEED the government to tell them how to live? Cant they figure it out for themselves? Cant they do ANYTHING without a league table? Or a poll? They have decided it's easier to not just imprison anyone rather than build a couple more. They are so afraid of what France might say if they object to the immigration quotas forced on them. Cant be seen as anti social now can we? And NEVER breathe the word racist!!! OMG!! That means you have made a decision! I dont know whats worse! Bush's tyranny or Blairs socialism!

Oh you mean he isn't a Stalinist? God I thought he was somewhere to the "left" of Lenin, despite the fact he got Britain into a mad war partly based on the capitalist pursuit of access to oil, he has undermined the trade union movement in Britain, he has torn the labour party in half, his closest internatioal ally is the most right-wing Republican President in about 3 generations, and he was a public schoolboy who is sending his boys to nob school as well. Of course this is the problem with the current vogue of this simplistic very-reactionary way of looking at things, in which all European leaders are seen as cyrpto-communists (please), the EU is a French plot involving some French objective (probably more Croissants) the UN is a proto world-government (socialist of course), the environment is another socialist plot, as is poverty, degradation, disenfranchisement, alienation, drugs, and despair, (along with any of the other inconveniences of our wonderful economic systems). America is seen or idealized as a blessed land of free-thinking peasant farmer citizens, living in some sort of pre-industrial utopia, striving against an evil-empire over-taxing government, the Middle east is basically a large mental asylum which requires that the inmates be bombed early and bombed often to stop them getting over the walls and spoiling the lawn, the Chinese are our NBFs but don't mention Tibet, (ching ching), and everywhere else is not worth talking about because they don't have shopping malls or MTV, (but especially oil). "Relative poverty". I can't remember what the definition of this is, but it'll be out there somewhere.... there's hardly any real poverty at all.
Couple all this this with the fact that for some it's easier to exist on benefits and/or in the black economy than work...
