The RAK thread got me to thinking about the opposite. Sometimes I think all common courtesy and goodness are gone. My, how the world is a changing. What have you seen change...for the worse?

I really hate that kids can't trick-or-treat all over the neighborhood...all over town (we lived in a small town)...or all over anywhere...besides immediate neighbors. This bothers me. I think kids trick-or-treating at the mall is a shame.

Customer service is pitiful...they don't even say "hi". What is up with that? At Wal-Mart...all I get is a total...no "hi". I deserve a "hi". Okay...I could say "hi" first, but I'm the one paying for the stuff...shouldn't they say "hi" first????

They used to say "hi" first!

Does this qualify for the world going to hell in a handbasket? I dunno.

what about politeness

A couple years back, I had a friend come visit from another part of the country, big metro city.

We went to a big tourist town and he made a purchase at a trendy little gift shop and when it was all done he walked away. I was mortified he did not say thank you so I watch the rest of the visit and he never said thank you ever.

I can't believe common politeness is gone.

politeness is a HUGE issue for me! thank you...please...excuse me. My kiddos I teach have this drilled into them.

Except they said..."thank you...Mrs. Patterson, I said it!!"

My part-time job at night is at a resturant/bar - and some of my high school teachers come in.. I asked one day

"Mr. So-n-so would like some more tea?" and he says-- Dawn, you really can call me Keith, and I said..My momma always said anyone that you respect as a child deserves that respect forever..-

So to this day - I call anyone -unless they are a good friend or have told me to call them by their first name - Ex: old teachers, neighbors, moms friends...by their title and last name.. Do you think that is wierd?? My kids have been taught the same..and they ALWAYS have to say please and thank you - and bless u, and your welcome too..

yesterday,

a little 9 year old boy who has lived next door to us since my kids were in diapers yells to me "ma'am (manners but not so fast) can your daughters come over at my house and play?" Me, thinking this is a nice kid...doesn't get out of the house much and is always playing by himself...decides why not? I can see them from my house...it's all good.

30 min later...go outside to call them back home and my 7 year old is already back home. 9 year old is still over there...so I ask...why are you here? I thought you were playing...

come to find out that this little boy was chasing my other daughter around the house telling her how "hot and sexy she was and that he wanted to kiss her"

Hello?? 9 years old and he is harassing my daughter?? What is wrong with kids these days?? Why can't they just play? They are in the 3rd grade for crying out loud! Why are these young kids already thinking 'sex' ?

Also, found a letter LAST YEAR which would have been 2nd grade...of a kid who wanted to meet her at the playgroud to have sex! :sneaky: The little twirp didn't even know what it meant!! What do ya do? You can't hog tie the little pervs and threaten them....

Just a shame. Guess I'll have to keep my kids locked up in the house until they are old enough to hurt the little boys that harass them.

Darn scary, best thing to teach your kids is trust your parents, and talk to them no matter what, make sure your kids know they can come to you.

I say this with huge emotions and concern as my oldest when through hell in grade 2. She was the victim of an obsessive fellow student he was so taken by her he was cruel to her. He took her winter coat in the dead of winter and tossed it into the toilet, outside into oily puddles etc just so she had no winter coat to get home with. He tried to strangle her with a wire, brought a steak knife to school one day to "show her" he often tripped her into the snow and would jump on her and jam her face into the snow. Now here is the kicker, we never knew of these things until the school year ended. I was furious with the principle for not EVER calling us. They told us at the end of the year the boy was terrible disturbed due to living in an abusive home. Crap batman my kid had the worst fears of sleeping in grade 2, she had fits so bad at nite she hurt herself with her stomping her feet in rage and we could not understand this at all. Oddly the next year this boy was out of the school for ever and our daughter was perfectly fine. It is my biggest, awfullest horriblest experience as a parent ever. I can't believe we never knew about any of this. I still feel bad about it. And believe me we have always been the kind of parents who allow the kids to come to us. The ex not so much over the past 6 or so years and finally not at all but me, gawd always.

Ok a vent there, but as a general parent to kid issue, allow your kids to trust you, and allow them to come to you and talk openly. They need that.

at this age I still thought that women got pregnant because they ate too much (and got such a big belly)...I thought the food turned into a baby! I wasn't the brightest child...but at least I wasn't a perv!!

It always cracked me up when parents/grandparents would come into the store I worked at and make the kids use manners. Then when it was the adult's turn, they would say "give me" instead of politely asking, and never say thank you.
