data recovery

I am seeking a freeware data recovery program that is user friendly. I just want to point it (the DR software) to the directory where the data used to be, and ask it to restore the data that was once there!! :-5

Too much to ask? Probably! But is don't hurt to ask...

How was the data lost - did you just delete it in error?

I have NO IDEA how the programs and other data in their directories were "removed"! I just went to organize all the programs I downloaded over the past month or so and put them on cd and lo-and-behold, nearly all of them were just GONE! The directories were intact just where the progies were downloaded to but the directories were empty except for the .txt files I left with some of them with publishers info.

I can only speculate that it may have been two theories

1. I used a download manager (Free Download Manager ver. 2.1) for most of them and every frew days I would "clear the list" of compleated and/or incompleted downloads. Maybe by deleting the list on the interface, it was also deleting the actual downloads too! bUT some of the missing progies were downloaded without the aid of this manager!

2. I also used a disk utility (Magic Utilities.2006.v4.33) every few days to clean up "junk, temp files and temp internet files and since all of the missing data was downloaded from the web, it decided to go after all of my internet activity, not just web documents and cookies and such; as well as not only deleting the temporary files left behind after a software install, maybe it also took out the install packages as well..

At any rate I found a freeware ( PC Inspector File Recovery) that can seek out lost data, but the darn thing doesn't tell me the names of the files it finds or their previous residence (directories). Just shows me what type of file it used to be (.exe, .jpg. .doc etc...), and the address of each "CLUSTER ADDRESS" it was found at. Then most of the files are either damaged or unusable in their present state!

And to add insult to injury, It came up with over two thousand files for me to sift through! It'll be faster to just re-download them on my (5kbs) dial-up than to go over it all that way!!

If anybody can tell me a fast and effective way to restore the missing files PLEASE let me know. I already tried "system restore" and searching the hard drive and recycle bin foe any traces but "nothing helped"...

If your data is so important to you, then I will not recommend you a FREE data recovery software. To recover your data from your case, you can try using Kernel Recovery Software tools, search google for "Nucleus Data Recovery". You can download the demo software and check if it shows your lost data.

If it shows your lost data then you can buy the software online.

My experience with their software is almost excellent.

Have you tried Stellar Phoenix FAT & NTFS data recovery software, a file and partition recovery utility. It will show you your data in tree structure form making the navigation of the data easier. Although the software is not free but recovery capablities of this utility is marvelous. I am extremely satisfied with the software.

Download the demo version. The demo will show you the recovered data, if you are satisfied with the result then you can save your data by getting the full version.

For the future - if it matters, back it up! A read-write DVD is probably the simplest.
