Tipping Repair or delivery men/women?

When we have repair & or furniture delivery men/women performing their job at our house & they spend an hour or more doing it I feel I need to "Tip" them, & and I do. (Just did it yesterday for the two men working 1-1/2 hrs on our A/C system. It was hot & they worked on the A/C ducts in our attic) :guitarist

Two Furniture delivery men spent almost "2" hours assembling the 8 piece living room furniture, so I Tipped them.

AM I WRONG, OR IS TIPPING THE RIGHT THING TO DO?

i think in those circumstances it is strictly a case-by-case personal decision...if you felt they earned and deserved it, they did! i have often done the same.

I don't know about your part of the country, but in California, the air conditioning folks get a damn good hourly rate, as do furniture delivery people. Why tip? Why tip them and not your doctor, dentist or accountant?

Tipping made sense to me, back when that was ALL a worker would receive and was totally dependent on tips for their survival.

Australia and New Zealand do not tip and it's a delight. The worker is expected to do a good job and render good serivce for the hourly wage they are being paid. How about tipping the auto machanic? Geez!!!

I always tip way over the minimum at restaurants, bars, airports and drive-in eateries. But for these expensive purchases and work? No Way. For a few years I did termite extermination and the thought of a tip on top of the pricey bill was completely unexpected. I was offered food a few times but no cash. Tipping is for the lowest paid service worker and should be a mandatory 25%.

tsk tsk and i thought you were a socialist, why not pay them a decent wage in the first place all it does is allow employers to get away with low pay.:sneaky:

Must admit I'm ambivalent about tipping-I know restauraunt workers depend on it to some extent but I think it's degrading for both parties-last time I gave a tip it was to delivery guys because they were humping stuff up three floors in a tenement building-gave them a crate of beer.

Do you tip in Macdonald's? :sneaky:

Good point about McDonalds. God knows these people are overworked and underpaid. Myself, I tip delivery and repair people. The tip is based on what they did, how well they did it, and how many breaks they took. By all means, feel free to demean me and tip me if you ever come to the club I work at LOL.

I agree with the idea that it depends on what they earn. AC repair men make a good wage.

I've had to take a couple of furniture delivery jobs in my life and trust me nobody takes that job if they can find another. Low pay and one injury after another.

( Want to find out how tough you are? Take a 300 lb. buffet set up two flights.)

Their bosses should pay them better but they don't. Tips are really what they depend on to make a decent buck. Waitress and waiter jobs the same. They should be paid better.

Lon, we just bought a bedroon set from one of the bigger furniture stores in our area here in PA. I was, at the time, in the same kind of business only commercial furniture, so we, through my business, had dealings with them. They pay their delivery guys minimum wage. And then they propably wonder why they can't keep help. :-5

I was a server for 5 years while in college. Yes, the restaurants get away with low pay...and that is wrong. Don't you get much better service though? If check out people worked on tips maybe they would say "hi" instead of just telling me the total (I hate that!).

I loved working for tips. I made much more than I would have if I depended on the restaurant to pay me. I earned EVERY penny of it too.

I only tip under-minimum wage workers. Everyone else should get educated and get a higher paying job if they feel they are not making enough.

I've heard this arguement alot and have to take exception to it.

Our society simply doesn't require 290 million people with degrees. An education may be the answer to a persons personal goals but it is not the answer to everybody getting a paycheck they can live on.

If everybody had a college degree all that means is the person waiting on you in McDonalds has a degree and is still working for substandard wages.

No matter how educated the people are we still need roofers, AC repairment and furniture delivery people.

Until we except the concept that everyone deserves to be paid a living wage I will continue to tip and just consider it part of the price of whatever I'm buying.

I agree completely, but I'm trying to put pressure on employers to pay a mnimum living wage. If enough employees get fed up with their pay, they may force an increase in the minimum wage. Same goal, different tactics.

The minimum wage is so ridiculously low that I have to give credit to the people that are actually working in those positions. Since from what I am led to believe, un-employment benifits (I personally have been lucky enough to have never collected un-employment benitits) can surpass the minimum wage salary!!! So these people can get more money for staying "Home" & collecting un-employment then going to work at those low paying jobs!!! :guitarist

Hey Jives...that sounded kind of ummmm....well......mean. I don't think people that make above minimum wage go around saying "why don't we get any tips!"

I think it is nice to appreciate people who do a good job though...no matter what they make. I wouldn't really tip my doctor though. You know what I mean. Don't you?

I had delivery men move my stuff two times...one time, one of the guys showed up hung over and threw up out in the drive-way...took a 2 hour lunch...and banged all of my stuff up.

The second time, they moved my stuff in half the time (I had more stuff too!). They were polite...and eveything was in perfect condition. I gave them a big fat tip. It was worth every penny...and a nice thing to do. You can make someone's day that way. Tips are good!

It just isn't right, I read today that we are getting a double whammy. Not only is the price of gas going up, but so is the price of everything else!

And wages are NOT keeping up with the pace. Bush needs to raise the minimum wage by at least $5! You can't live for less than $10 an hour anymore.

It seems to me that everyone has a tip jar out now. I went to the gas station the other day and the cashier had one, not only that she gave me a mean look when I didn't give her a tip! I worked at McDonald's when I was young and I never asked for tips!

Besides, i have a sick wife, a ton of medical bills, unpaid taxes, and I make pennies per hour, despite the fact that I have 11 years of college!

Tip your teacher!!!
