Ok... moving right along... to some health and wellness,, Has anyone heard of a new pill called Resveratrol? The natural compound found in red grape skins, in pill form. All the benefits of red wine, without the alcohol.
It supposedly... adds 10 years to your life
Protects against heart attacks
Stops cancer cells, and improves blood flow to the brain, which prevents memory loss.
Very interesting. I am going to check this out. Be careful though. I recently learned that supplements are not to be taken lightly. 4000 units of Salmon Oil a day ( for joints) caused me to become miserably itchy.

>>>Has anyone heard of a new pill called resveratrol???
Well, yes, actually.
It's hardly new. Just a new wrapper on old stuff.
Some years back the observation was made that the French smoke, drink and eat like pigs, yet have far fewer heart attacks than Americans. It was discovered that all that red wine was having a protective effect on their hearts.
Sort of keeps their blood slippery. Came to be known as the French paradox.
Enterprising marketers were quick to try and capitalize on this by attempting to bottle it in the form of grape seed extract. Later it was found that pine nuts, known as pygnogenol to your local health food store, also contain the "secret" ingredient, OPC's.
Resveratrol is the latest magic pill to be sold as the French paradox in a bottle. It does contain OPC's, which do provide some of the protective nutrients that they are exagerrating the claims wildly for in a shameless attempt to liberate you from some of your hard earned $$$.
Of the three, grape seed extract has, by far, the greatest number of OPC's, and, as such, the biggest bang for your buck. Ten years ago the same marketing techniques were used to hype it.
As a nutritionist, I don't use resveratrol with clients. I do use grape seed, at times, when appropriate, because it's better.
If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. The science behind the marketing for resveratrol is poor, but resveratrol isn't harmful, and it does have some benefits.
>>>supplements are not to be taken lightly...
True dat. These are not benign compounds. while they do not have the dangerous side effects of drugs, when you go into your local vitaminshoppe and pluck these things, willy-nilly off the shelf, you are self medicating. At risk of being self serving, you should engage the services of a coach who actually understands how these things work, and don't work, and is able to help you determine which ones are right for you.

I don't mean to make light of this I read that as reversatrol
and I thought it was a joke, a pill you took for the times you blurt out something stupid like...
"what were you thinking when you bought that one" *pop a reversatrol and repeat... "oh yes that lime green bag looks great with your purple shoes"*

Alobar, Thank you soooo much for the information. Very informative. I actually started the thread in an attempt to discuss something benign. I would much prefer to having my glass of red wine to swallowing a pill. And as I said I have learned my lesson regarding self medicating even with supplements. Recently I started swallowing 4000 units a day of Salmon Oil. I never connected a horrible itch ( in patches) that I was suffering to the pills. A physician friend looked at the bottle and told me I was taking 10 to 12 x the amount suggested for the human body. She pointed out to me that of course the bottle said to take 4 capsules a day.....$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Salmon oil, I learned stores itself in the body. Stopped the pills.... no more itching.
Thank You again for all of your information.
