Dont Drink Horlicks!

Post by meltonpie »

A little story concerning my lap-top.......................

A week ago I was absorbed in an article put out by one of the newsletters I subscribe to. It was evening time, and getting near to bed-time and by my side I had my mug of Horlicks (said to promote a good nights sleep). Still reading, I reached across for my mug - and missed the handle. I had caught the side of it, and of course over it went - in the direction of my lap-top. As the sticky liquid spread all over the keyboard my cry of anguish nearly made my wife jump out of her chair. (She reckons that I have knocked her recovery from hospital back six months!). I quickly picked up the lap-top and turned it upside down to enable the liquid to pour out of it - all onto the carpet, so I was in further trouble! I mopped it as dry as I could and left it a few hours to dry out. When I switched on, there was nothing showing on the screen, So I left it upside down until the morning, and was delighted to find that the next time switching on, the desk-top showed on the screen, but pressing some keys did not give the correct result. Eventually over the days they started to react correctly, but then as it thoroughly dried out, some keys were permanently stuck.

So, now what? It looked as if I was going to have to try my insurance company, but as there was nothing to lose I thought "Why not a good wash-out"? I took the machine outside, propped it upside down on a workbench and proceeded to spray water upwards onto the keyboard, using a garden hand sprayer. I drained as much as I could out of it, and left it 24 hours upside down to dry out. With trepidation I switch on and everything came to life, and all the keys seemed free. One programme was a bit dodgy, and I thought I would have to reinstall it, but not a problem - only a nuisance.

So now, all fired up, I felt ready to make a few entries on ForumGarden and switched the machine on again - BUT ................... now there is only a blank dark screen, and whilst I can hear the fan blowing I am unable to do anything. It looks as if I have killed it off, and so its back to my older machine. Tomorrow it seems that it will be a call to the insurance company, but there's certainly a couple of morals to this. If you must drink your Horlicks whilst at the computer, don't be using a lap-top. If it had just been a keyboard, at least there would have been no damage to the machine. Secondly, don't believe what they say about Horlicks and a good nights sleep - I certainly didn't get one that night.

No. Never.

That is the cause of your laptops death.

And no showering with toasters either!

I can't believe it - it's sprung back to life tonight - and I informed the insurance company of its demise this morning.

Now what was that about toasters? Just hang on a minute whilst I get a bucket of water!

You know? I was just reading an article on laptop spills and it seems you did the right thing! My apologies.

But I still think I'm correct about the toaster. :D
