No justice for Emmitt Till
This both saddens and angers me. It's as though 52 years later, the South is still saying young Emmitt was expendable. Will his family never know any justice?

I think I watched a film but can't remember, was he a black guy that fell for a white girl? If it is the same guy, I think he got beaten and killed. But of course I could be totally wrong

Who is "the South" and where do they say young Emmett was expendable?
What options does any Justice department have which could bring closure to his family?

It was about 30 years ago and I cant remember. They were good though. I think my brother knows them, they're still living locally.

The South is that area south of the Mason-Dixon Line, of which I am a member. Emmitt Till was a victim of the Civil Rights movement, and was killed for supposedly whistling at a white woman.
The Justice Department could hold those involved, who are still alive, accountable for this horrendous crime.

I think my point is that, firstly, "the South" is a what, not a who, and you ignored my asking who "is still saying young Emmett was expendable", and that secondly "those involved", as far as suspects go, especially the self-confessed killers, are all dead. Who else is there to hold "accountable for this horrendous crime"?

I'd much rather you gave a focused answer to the two direct questions, rather than hope I might come to a conclusion by reading up on it off-site. They're very simple ones.

Not exactly a neutral article is it.
I don't know how one would possibly extract justice for all the black and white deaths that occurred in that era. I would hate to see Till or any one specific person become a poster person for them. I think not putting a specific face on the period gives a deeper impact to what happened.

You are right, this case and any other similar cases have lost their lustre a long time ago.All the concern with one category of people that developed 50 years ago was degenerate and wrong.Who remembers the name of one or more of the slain white or otherwise non-black people who have been slain or mutilated by black savages.

Stroganoff, I fear you mistook my comment as a racial thing. I am not sure where you're going with black savages or if I am misreading you this time but both blacks and whites and probably others were killed and they all deserve remembrance and acknowledgement. (I'm talking about the victims of course. The perpetrators can rot in hell for all I care.) That's the reason I don't think it would be good to earmark Till or any one specific person as a heroic victim when there were a ton of others dying for the same reasons.

Wow. You simply take my breath away with your rhetoric. Such a profound statement!
I actually weep for you, though, as you obviously do not know that blacks are wonderful people, and, just the same as you and I, trying to live a good life, and raise a family.
As for remembering names, how about Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner? They were falsely arrested, then shot and killed, along with James Chaney. BTW, the former were Jewish, while the latter was black.
And Red Glitter, no one is trying to make one person into a poster child at all. Families are simply trying to get justice for themselves, a right all races have. It gives them closure on a most painful era in their lives.
Racism is stupid, and the only way we can end it is by accepting every aspect of it, even the painful parts.

"Those involved", as far as suspects go, especially the self-confessed killers, are all dead. Who else is there to hold "accountable for this horrendous crime"? What element of justice is still something that can be pursued that hasn't already been taken to its practical (or even theoretical) limit?

The woman who claimed that young Emmitt whistled at her is still alive.
It is not only a case of seeking justice from those who killed this boy, but also from the authorities who tried to claim that Emmitt had run away, vice being kidnapped and brutally beaten, then murdered.
The two men who were acquitted of this crime later recanted, and admitted their guilt. However, since they were acquitted, there was no way for them to be tried again for the same crime.
We Americans cannot sweep this era under the rug, so to speak, not when there are still more hate crimes going on, even today. We need to keep this at the forefront, to learn from that harsh time, again and again.
