Mountain Lion vs. Mule. Who would win?

Post by CVX »

These photos come from a guy in AZ. Yes, the mule killed the mountain lion. The lion had been stalking them for the better part of the morning. The party was out on a hunt. The thought was that they the lion was wanting one of the dogs.

The cat ambushed them, and the mule pictured tossed its rider and went into attack (defense) mode, the horses scattered and shots were fired but no one was sure if they hit the cat or not.

Unfortunately, it wasn't until it was almost over that one of the guys started snapping pics. The mule finally stomped the cougar to death after biting and throwing it around like a rag doll. The dogs wouldn't even come close until the mule settled down.

Found this story (hello Tombstone!) on the Tombstone Tumbleweed.

Sorry folks, there is no way a healthy mountain, in the open, will be killed by a mule. The cat is far too agile and fast. It is capable of ducking the kick, then destroying the tendon on that leg. The cat can kill by ripping the juglar or biting into the spine. :yh_sweat

Scrat wrote: Sorry Wulf but I have watched enough Nature episodes to have seen at least one lioness with a broken jaw after being kicked in the head by a zebra. I have no doubt that a fully mature catamount would not bother with a healthy mule but that a juvenile might try and end up getting killed.

I hear that lions take down bull Elk by getting the victim to charge and leaping into the air to land on the Elks rack/head forcing the head down where the horns get caught in the dirt and the Elk breaks its neck. Dicey but a experienced cat could do it. Grabbing a mules leg would be suicidal.
Sorry Scrat, i have spent a good deal of time in the forest, i have seen a mountain lion up close and personal. This is a much different animal than the african lion. Different habitat, different hunting, stalking, and kill technique. Actually the mountain lion would more resemble the leopard in kill technique.

The african lion hunts in more open country, relys heavily on its weight, and massive jaws, and will hunt in a pack when possile.

The mountain lion is a solitary creature, normally choosing smaller targets than elk or mules.

As i indicated, a favorite technique with larger animals is to sever the spinal chord at the head/neck junction. An airborn mountain lion in conflict with an elk is not trying to weight down the elks head, but to get his teeth into the spine. I suspect whover told you that story, is also an expierenced snipe hunter.

Scrat wrote: I know Mt lions stalk their prey and have the ability to leap at least 40 ft onto the backs of whatever but I don't think they try to break the backs/necks of their large prey by biting the spine. And they are NOT going to grab something by the leg unless they are young and stupid.

Small deer, rabbits ect can have their necks broken but large adult prey are strangled. African lions and our lions both use the same technique on large prey, grab the windpipe and close it.
Behavior: Mountain lions are very powerful and normally prey upon large animals, such as deer, bighorn sheep and elk. However, they can survive preying on small animals as well. They usually hunt alone, at night. They prefer to ambush their prey, often from behind. They usually kill with a powerful bite below the base of the skull, breaking the neck.

After locating large prey by scent or sound, it usually slinks forward slowly and silently, with belly low to the ground and legs tensed to leap. It tries to stalk within 30 feet (9 m) before running from its hiding place and leaping onto its victim’s back, keeping its hindlegs on the ground for support, control, and stability. The Mountain Lion kills its prey by biting into the back of the victim’s neck.

Active year round, the lion’s staple diet is deer. Adults maintain their condition by eating a deer a week. The deer is often killed cleanly with a broken neck. The cat gorges on the carcass until it can eat no more, covers the remainder with leaves of conifer needles, then fasts for a few days, digesting and resting.

Contrary to popular belief, cougars do not lurk in the treetops waiting to ambush passer-bys. They hunt on the ground and ambush their prey from behind. They are generally nocturnal and solitary hunters. The success of the hunt depends solely on the element of surprise. By playing in the manner of kittens, they perfect their "stalking" technique at an early age. They are classified as a "stalking predator" rather than a "pursuit predator" like the wolf. A fatal bite below the base of the skull, resulting in a broken neck, is their preferred method of killing prey

Well, the tortoise beat the rabbit / hare in the race and David with a stone beat Goliath the giant and West Ham even beat Arsenal in the 1980 Cup Final so perhaps the underdog can win sometimes!

I live at the base of the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming. I have talked with several men and women from the Wyoming Game and Fish dept. who have lived here all their life and have worked at the Fish & Game for years and most of them say they have never seen a Mountain Lion up close in the wild. ( although they are in the Bighorn Mountains). Mountain Lions are a very elusive animals and they are very rarely seen by humans in the wild. Some of you guys are lucky to have seen them so often. I hunt the Bighorns all the time and I camp up there a lot to, and I never seen a mountain lion up close.
