Private, Keep Out, Controlled Area, Limited Access? No-one wants to show their privates, nor do they want their private information shared? Do you feel violated learning your private messages may not be private? this may not pertain to everyone, I need to go to the rest room right now.

Explain Private Messages please----------if you are talking about the net or email, they are not private, but public. U.S. Postal Mail is private, or is supposed to be.

What's a Restroom? Is that the same thing as a Toilet? Are you going to rest?

No, it doesn't bother me a bit. Some people have access to PM's, like forum admin's and they are more than welcome to read my PMs. It's their space and they can do what they want with it, especially if its noted in the TOS that that is an option. For the most part, nobody would be interested in my private messages anyway. I usually write them just so I don't have to waste space in the threads to address one person.

Doesn't bother me either, but now that I know they can read them if need be, I may send some juicy ones just for their amusement. :)

Discovering that Pms and e mails could be read made me realize that I got involved in something I didnt know enough about. And I feel foolish and violated. I know that this is revolting but the concept of e mails not being private intrigues me. There is someones e mail I would love to read. Im not saying I would do it... But could I do it? Can anyone read anyones? wouldnt I have to know a password?

Im not talking about here on the forum . I want to read e mail from a private subscriber. Tell me if its possible.

I always had the feeling that my messages were accessible but figured that no one would do it unless I was suspected of something...in which case be my guest. But don't blame me if you fall asleep.

weeder, I think only the email server can access the messages of a user. It's mostly there in case the police etc. ask for records. If you don't mind invasion of privacy charges then you could add impersonating a police officer and probably get them (if you're a good impersonator, that is).

If you would like to see just how private some of your posts and email are, just type in every name that you have have used on the web in a GOOGLE SEARCH, one name at a time.

Lon's right, why do you think some of our lurkers never post? They're afraid of the publicity.

I sometimes intercept notes in class (I never read them aloud though!) I lust look for things that I need to know, drug use, suicidal thoughts, etc. When they get upset that I take action on something they've written (usually profanity directed at a classmate that might turn to violence)

I tell them "If you don't want other people to know about it, don't write it down!"

If I get upset, It's usually because I'm passionate about that subject and I'll defend my stance. Normally, I try to be polite and diplomatic at all times. Like "Thumper" said in Bambi, "if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all."

I'm of hotsauce's opinion, "There's no shame in my game!" Great saying too, hotsauce! Mind if I steal it for the classroom? :wah:

I was the supervisor in my dispatch center at one time. All incoming and outgoing calls were recorded, as well as all radio traffic. Tape gets pulled a lot to verify things said or done on a call, questionable radio traffic, etc. and only supervisors and management have access to it.

While trying to find a particular call one time, I came across a personal call between an employee and a friend. It was inappropriate as far as content, serious flirting, things of that nature. And, risky since everyone knows that everything is recorded. Plus, those records can be subpeonaed (sp?) and how would that look to have people outside the system listening to that sort of thing when they're supposed to be working.

I took her aside to tell her she needed to be careful about that sort of thing and to use her cell for personal calls. You would have thought I intentionally invaded her privacy or something. She stayed PO'ed about that for a long time.

The word "Private" in any types of messages has connotations of only being directed at a select few, instead of the at general masses arena. It is in no way to be assumed that only the intended addresses can access that message. The general masses can't access that message, but be assured that system administrators & or law enforcement authorities can definetely access any & all "on-line" files, if/when required to do so. So if an "absolutely private" discussion ever needs to be conducted, without outside monitoring, it must be conducted through personal direct Face to Face conversation between only the parties involved. :wah:

Lets face it internet is not private, was likely never intended to be private and is never going to be private so.... if your hiding things get off the internet.

Mail as in postal mail is private and it is a violation to violate ones mail.

I would think it reasonable for anyone to assume that if they use the 'private message' facility, the message would be private, if it's not it should be called something else.

I have nothing to hide as well, but the option is there for messaging which allows people to have direct chat? If thats the case i would love to read *******what they talked about. It reflects in posting, as it seems people congregate towards some? see it all the time. correct, for complete privacy get off the net. well i'm not getting off & i do not use private messaging, i have 3 e-mails. I now understand how it works.

Ok So if everything is not private - then why can't I find my 1st true love from 1st grade on here????????? :p

No seriously - Being on the computer only puts you at risk...you, yourself, and ....YOU - cuz everything can be opened up if its really needed to be.. Check out that soilder from Iraq. his family just won a case against Yahoo that had to give up his password...with that I am still confused on what I would do...being a mother I would say Hell yes...but then listening to a soilders part - it puts me at .."there are things that parents of adult children should never know"..LOL

I take you're point, but what I think people get upset about is, when private messages are read by admin, especially when it's admin that have made the facility available.

Well... yahoo, google, msn.. all the big names provide e-mail accounts.. if you think that those are private you are mistaken.. sooo.. as I said.. take nothing for granted out here in the cyber west and assume that everything that you write is readable by someone else.. and people thought the Federal government was bad at invading thier privacy..... bwhahahahahahahahaaha......

Private?? You've got to be kidding!!

We live in glass houses! Nothing we do, and I mean nothing, goes unnoticed. With all the global satellites that can read your mail over your shoulder, and all the cctv cams, nothing we do, say or write is private. Someone is watching, always! Sound paranoid?? Nope. Just simple fact. Privacy is an illusion. We've become such a technophile society that privacy has become a thing of the past. How can anyone claim a right to privacy when that doesnt even exist anymore? :-2
