Today as I was getting ready to head to town, county animal control paid me a visit. It seems some people have been complaining about my dogs barking at night. It seems these same morons did not have the integrity to complain to me about it personally but felt the need to rat me out to animal control.

I have been wishing I could unload the dogs into homes so I'd have less liability but one of my fears has always been that a/c would confiscate them and haul them to the pound because I'm over the county limit. I don't want that to ever happen regardless. So he said he appreciated the work we did since we help keep them from having to kill and pointed out he'd never once been called to my house in five years time. I explained about the weird stuff going on at night and that that was when they did their barking and he accepted that. Still he told me he wouldn't hassle me at this point provided I called Planning and Zoning or got a kennel license. I admit I never crossed my t's in that respect as where we live I thought I could get away with it. And up until now, have. It pisses me off having to deal with animal control as I consider them anathema and part pf the problem but I was sweet as honey and said I'd immediately contact P&Z. I wonder how many hundreds that's going to be. Its all about lining their pockets because me getting a zoning permit is certainly not going to stop the dogs from barking which was supposed to be the complaint. I wanted to point that out but sometimes I do know when to shut up.

I wish people had integrity and backbone. All they had to do was contact me instead of doing it in this chickensh*t manner.

OMG how gutless! Having had the problem myself of a neighbour with a dog barking day and night, I can understand the annoyance but not to come to you first is just damn rude and nasty. Especially with what you do. It's not like they're your pets and you're out leaving them cooped up all day long as my neighbour was. The poor dog used to cry as she'd leave it in all weekend while she went away. I'd be fuming if I were you. At least they were understanding but get the dogs to bite some butts if you find out who the big mouths were.

Geez, it seems like no good deed goes unpunished! It was nice of you guys to help that woman. Some people have nothing better to do than get in other people's business. These were the "tattletales" you knew in grade school, only grown up now.

Offhand, I stay up all night and until about 3 AM every night. I am fully aware of when my dogs bark and how loud they may be and it hasn't been anything that needed to be reported. What goes around comes around. Hopefully soon in this case.

I have been on both sides of this fence (excuse the pun). Years ago before I had a fence, I had a dog that would get out to take his daily walk (black lab = harmless). I had spitefull neighbors that would call animal control and I even ended up going to court. I knew that it was my fault, because dogs shouldn't "roam", and there is a leash law. I paid a pretty price for my neglegence....Now, I have a fence, of course my bigger dog can clear it with no effort at all, so kind of defeats the purpose, she is really good though and stays in our yard (we have an acre). However, there is a dog in the neighborhood that comes around and she is always roaming, which I could care less, cause I love dogs, but she and my dog run off and I won't see my Sandy for hours...this has been going on for about 2 months or more now. Last night my son had enough, he picked this dog up and put her in my car, (driving with her in his lap) and took her to her owner about a half a mile away....and the owner looked at my son and said "she knows when it's time to come home"...my son was LIVID!!

I told the boys that if he doesn't care about his dog, I'm going to start feeding her, bathing her and bringing her in the house and take her as my own!!:-4

Can you have a "dog wash" as a fundraiser to raise the money for the permit?

Yes, I could DG, but I actually have to have permits for "that" too! I live in rural Permit Land where the bigwigs all want a piece if the $$ pie. Besides my org is running on just one person now- me and it woulld be easier for me to scrape together the cash.

That's not my big problem now though- animal control just left my house again! He told me the spineless pucks complained again that there was barking last night! I was up ALL NIGHT and all morning! There was one howl from Willie and I took care of it immediately. That was it. So he said these jerkoff neighbors are going to record my dogs at night for seven days. Then they will fill out paperwork. If there is barking within seven days, I get cited and go to court. If there's no barking and they don't fill out papers then I don't have to go. I know who these people are and I keep wishing the worst stuff on them possible. I am so livid I could spit blood. I explained this morning there was barking but it was a response to the neighbors' dogs who were barking two blocks away. I shut mine up but I can't control theirs. He gave me that song and dance about "doing his job...some people just hate dogs...he wouldn't have called animal control either...etc". I think I'm being baited. I'd take my backbone over and personally see these jerks but I'm sure if I do they'll report me for harrassing them. They seem to be that kind of people.

Not to mention if barking was a problem, I would be the first to know since I LIVE WITH THEM!

That is such a pain, I've been there and I know exactly how you feel. I am sorry...People can be such a pain...geesh...don't they have other things to do??

I wish you lived closer to me, I'd have you bring them to my house for 7 days...:wah:

Well stay up tonight and see who's out with their tape recorder, then ya'll know who's harassing you. :D

I know what your going through though having horrid neighbors. I had some too, but they finally ticked off everyone in the neighborhood, so it was wise for them to move. And I think they were a little embarrassed that we all had just started dragging the lawn chairs out to the front yard, when the cops would show up at their house for domestic disturbances.

Red, this idea may be all wet, but maybe. . . . . . . . . . . do you know 3 or 4 people living outside of earshot of your house that could each house 1 or or 2 of the dogs for the next week or so? Till the deadline is up, then you take them back.:-2

Hi Cars. It's a good idea but as neighbors people don't really know each other out here. We're not friends. We're not even neighborly. I guess I have to play their game but bet that I'm calling in a drug report a couple months from now. See how they like being harrassed.

I have had the exact situation when I used to live in town. I had the police on my doorstep one morning because the woman across the road complained my dog(s) were barking all night. She assumed it was my dog because she was so nosey she was always out watching everything I did with the dogs and was always asking questions. I was always evasive with my answers because I knew she was looking for something to complain about. I explained to the police that I would have noticed if any of my dogs were barking all night because I put EVERY dog in my house at 9:00pm every night and I am a very light sleeper. I was lucky because about that time the dog at the house above me started barking and it appeared that was what the lady was hearing. When you have a number of dogs, everyone will assume whatever dogs they hear are yours. It is probably just someone who likes to create problems for other people and who doesn't like dogs. The same lady called animal control on me because she said I had at least a dozen dogs in my house. There was no limit on numbers of animals in that area, and animal control let me know she had been to my house. There were no dogs in trouble. The ones that stayed outside had clean runs, had a house and clean water and looked well fed. But, it was always a source of stress to me knowing that woman was looking for something to get me in trouble for. I know anywhere you live this can happen and that is probably why I doubt I'll continue my dog hobby of showing and working on breeding healthy, cockers with good temperament, after over twenty years of research and work. It is more stress than satisfaction. I also have six rescue cockers, but I have stopped accepting any, due to the liabilities. I hope you find out who it is and set a big flaming bag of poop on their doorstep if they get you in trouble:sneaky:

How many dogs do you have? Can you crate them inside at night? (I normally don't go in for crating dogs, but if you have a big lot, it would be more feasible.)

Were you there, with your dogs, before the neighbors? Can you get your place grandfathered in under an old ordinance on number of dogs allowed?

Just this past summer, I had five cats and five dogs in my house. It was tough, esp. with my mom's basset hound from hell, but I managed. (That basset won't be up here again, btw. Too mouthy!)

Good luck.

Why are your dogs barking? are they running around playing or what?

I can quite honestly say & this will not be popular that we have a neighbour who's dog barks all the time. In general no-one minds during the week as we all work so dont hear it but when sat & sun morning come around & you wake up at 7 & 8am to barking, all the neighbours (kinda funny really) open windows & doors & scream - shut that fkn dog up. Now although im saying its funny, its not really !! Everybody needs a long lie after working all week.

I myself had a dog for 14yrs & never once any problems with barking, she just dident do it but she was here by herself, no other doggie friends to run around & play with. Here in Scotland you are only allowed 1 dog in a heavily populated area, this seems to be the best course of action given the problems associated with. If you are in a heavily populated area with more than one dog then the best thing to do would be to excersize the dogs on the beach or park & only allow outside for (quick relief) separately at night so as not to encourage play & potential barking. Keepers of large amounts of dogs would be best in a country area whereby the neighbours would not hear & therefore no problems ;)

Actually Buttercup, where I live does constitute living in the country. That's part of the trouble as any barking bounces off the mountains and echoes off the ravine behind me. Desert acoustics. It is deathly quiet here at night after everything and everyone has settled down. My dogs bark because they are dogs and this is their way of communicating. When I feed them that's when it's bad because they get excited over their dinner. But we're talking early evening and not at sleeping hours. Personally I think the pond scum neighbors just picked me because my dogs are plainly visible. They have no idea what dogs are barking where. I just heard my neighbors' dogs this morning but I'm sure I'll be held up for that too.

Maybe it's just my turn. I've watched my rival rescue orgs get harassed repeatedly and have to make unending trips to court because someone didn't like living near a bunch of dogs. I've been lucky so far.
