Jane Pauley show recently had a story about an officer and his K-9, Niko.
Long story short, Niko had been shot on duty because the officer could not have Niko wear both his tracking harness AND his bulletproof vest. The vests provided do not have a D-Ring to allow them to double as a tracking vest.
Niko's handler came across Pennies to Protect Police Dogs, Inc. and asked for help in purchasing a proper vest that normally costs $1000. PPPD was founded by then 9-yr old Stacy Hillman (now 14). She raises money and has negotiated discounts with Point Blank to purchase these vests for $600. Please check out the website http://www.penniestoprotectpolicedogs.o ... /index.php to find out how you can donate money, get a fundraiser started at your kids' schools, or how to get a vest for your K-9.

Pennies to protect police dogs!
A group of neighbours and friends near me walk our dogs every morning, come rain or shine at 08.00. We call our group the K-9 Club
Pennies to protect police dogs!
I saw that too.. What a cool thing..We had a dog just retire and a new one already in training..I was going to check to see if we had anything like that here...They are so amazing.. My brother is a homicide Det. In Colorado - and when he was dong narcodics he had a dog.. He had him through retirement and through his death..He went blind and finally had to be put to sleep but that dog was AMAZING..Dan could put him behind a baby gate which he could almost walk over and say "Stay" - that dog -no matter what would never jump that fence..He was just so cool..

A great cause. These dogs should be given all the protection of the two-legged officers.

While I admire and agree with the sentiment, these dogs are hardly defenseless. Highly trained and chosen specifically for their aggressiveness, they can take down the biggest guy out there and a lot easier and more effectively than a single human cop. There are also laws protecting the K-9 officers and the penalty for trying to harm one is similar to the penalty for assaulting a human cop.
