"Why not just tell people I'm an alien from Mars. Tell them I eat live chickens and do a voodoo dance at midnight. They'll believe anything you say, because you're a reporter. But if I, Michael Jackson, were to say, 'I'm an alien from Mars and I eat live chickens and do a voodoo dance at midnight', people would say, 'Oh, man, that Michael Jackson is nuts. He's cracked up. You can't believe a damn word that comes out of his mouth.' " Michael Jackson

I find something very soothing about a South African Accent

I didn't know American had an accent...thought it was different areas...
When I see certain people post, I try to image what it would sound like if they were talking...
Love to see, Blikey and Bloke and Babes, Posh etc.....and other words that I'm not used to hearing...I think its great!!:)

I like all accents, except for them clicky African ones. I would hate to be in bed with one of them and when things started getting hot they started clicking at me.

CBC Radio cheaps out in the wee hours by playing English language radio shows from around the world.
There's a South African Broadcasting Corp. show that comes on at 3:00 AM (Rise & Shine, Africa). The sports guy clicks and clacks like crazy.
When I first heard him, I thought my radio was on the fritz.

From the classic "Germans" episode of the superb Fawlty Towers series :
A somewhat concussed Basil (due to a tete-a-tete with a falling mounted moosehead trophy) waits on his newly arrived Teutonic guests.
After they order their meal in heavily accented English, Basil stares blankly at them for a moment, then says "...oh, that's right, you're German! For a moment there, I thought there was something wrong with you.":yh_rotfl

Ah, but which Southern belle accent? There's a difference in each southern state. Me, I'm partial to Florida, (yes, north Florida has a southern accent, which is mine), and Georgia's. Anything else is too twangy for my ears.

BTW, the Southern accents you hear in movies is generic. If you close your eyes, and listen carefully, they're all very similar, and muddled. Julia Roberts, for being a Georgia girl, dropped her accent to succeed in Hollywood. For Steel Magnolias, she had to have a voice coach. Sad.
There are distinct dialects within the Southern vernacular, and quite a few of them are being lost as urbanization spreads. One of the most endangered is the Gullah accent, from the lowlands of South Carolina.

There are so many irish accents, some I like, some not. I think it's just Northern Island I really don't like. Dublin is soooooo damn sexy.

Thanks Tater
But people are actually surprised to hear that I am from Boston. I am always aware of *not* dropping my "r's" and of enunciating clearly.
And like Minxsy, I also adore a South African accent :-4
