Some People Are Just Plain Rude

Post by Pheasy »

Last night I went to my sons annual school talent show. Grades 4 through 6 put on a great show - all the children were great and very brave. There is a boy in my sons class who is always in trouble and has been suspended a couple of times - now I know why. His mother and older sister were sat behind us. They were very loud and rude - with comments like 'that kid sings like a retard', 'why don't you try singing' and many other loud rude comments. In the end the principle had to tell them to shut up. Everyone was really shocked at them. I wonder where their son gets his problems from!!

I really thought about how to handle other kids and parents at my daughter's school. Ever since she hit Grade 1 I've had this theory:

It's like her place of work. There are social and political issues for kids at school that, as the parents, we are only partly aware of. So whenever I hear of a problem, or become aware of it, I talk to her about what actions I should take, if any. Kids are affected by how their parents are seen. Most of the time something has come up she has decided that it's better if she deals with herself and she always asks my advice. I deal with problems with the teachers or principal and she, generally, handles the stuff with her peers. It works well. She is fairly confident and is learning how to be a problem solver.

These people are destroying any chance their kids have of being socially acceptable. It's something that the principal needs to deal with. He should be having a meeting with them and explaining the expectations of the school.

I was thinking about going in and talking to Principal about this - do you think I should or well I get told to butt out?

mmm - I think I will - it was also setting a bad example to the other kids in the audience - I just hope none of the talent show kids heard it. I will let you know how I get on

Good for you to make a stand and say that this behaviour is not acceptable.

Not sure how much the Pricinpal will be able to do but at least he could try to prevent this sort of thing happening again.

These are young kids who should be encourage to have a go on stage, ok they may not be great but it's about having fun.

My daughter did ballet when she was little - wasn't much good at it (turns out she has completely flat-feet) but loved the annual shows, all the ballet school took part and all had fun.

"A retard"?? When people use words like that, I always think it speaks volumes about their own mental capacity! Perhaps they've been "dumbed down" [sic].

That's what I would do.

But ask what the principal thinks first so s/he has a chance to establish his own level of distaste with it first. Sounds like s/he had pretty strong feelings. Then all you have to do is ask if s/he can do anything about it, like call a meeting with the parents. (If the principal's a man, asking if he can do something almost guarantees he'll say 'yes' ;) )

At times like that I would wish I would have the balls to turn around and kindly state how rude those people were being.

I am such a coward.

This reminds me of a time I was in a department store, I was going through a VERY stressful time, can't even explain how bad it was.....anyway, my youngest child was running a cart down the isle, I was trying to look at something, the other 2 boys are doin' stuff...my youngest accidentally ran into a woman who dileberatley stood in his way, seeing the child coming her way. I was watching the whole thing. He said he was sorry, she sneered at him, so I leaned down and said, "honey some people aren't very nice, and we need to deal with that sometimes"...she went off on me...told me I was a bad mother and a bunch of crap...and I told her to walk a day in my shoes, and don't judge me by a child pushing a cart. I told her if it were me I'd smile at the kid and keep going, she obviously didn't like kids and didn't need to be so nasty. I was shaking for 2 hours after that. I never do that, I HATE confrontation..but don't tell me I'm a bad Mother....them is fightin' words!!!....

and that was about 3 years ago, btw

Its true that some people are just down on kids wendy, and cant understand they are just acting their age.

Its a shame tho that this boy pheasant is talking about is probably going to have a hard life and be in trouble constantly because he happened to be born to idiots. it makes you wonder how they were brought up themselves!

That's totally inappropriate. Somebody should have sorted them out. I would have been on them like a hen on a junebug. And probably would have been tossed out but that's not the point.

Well it is done. Another parent had already complained but had asked the Principal to talk to me as I knew who it was. I saw the note 'talk to Theresa when she drops Lucy off for Kindergaten'. So he was already taking it seriously. I filled him in on all the 'NASTY' details. Then got very passionate about the long term affect it could of had on these kids on stage had they heard the comments. And also the impression it was leaving on the kids in the audience. I am not sure what he can do - other than tell them not to attend these functions anymore. It will give him a better understanding of the sort of upbringing the poor son of these morons is getting.

Well I hope he can do something.

I'm all fired up now - I think I will have to beat Hubby when he gets home .......mmmm.......best not he might request it every day. :sneaky:

Thanks for advice everyone.
