Right Pressure?

With the rising price of Gas, everyone's Cars S/B kept in tip-top proper working order. So as to maximize their Car's fuel economy! One of the things that a lot of people seem to forget to do, is to make sure their Car's Tire Pressure is set to the proper inflation rating. (Proper Tire inflation can increase your Car's fuel economy by 3 to 5 MPG) :-2 It's good for you & also the Environment at the same time!

DO YOU YOURSELF CHECK, OR HAVE YOUR MECHANIC PERIODICALLY CHECK YOUR CAR'S TIRE PRESSURE ON ALL "4" TIRES?

And keep to the speed limit, have your oil changed every 3 months and just some good general upkeep helps too.

I know its daft but i'm scared of putting too much air in & exploding the tyre!

I check my tyre pressure every month or so, how often should you actually do it?

It scares me too Abbey!

How many out there could change a flat tyre??

I could on our car, but since we've had a landrover I've tried several times and failed much to my disgust!!

I could on our car, but since we've had a landrover I've tried several times and failed much to my disgust!! :oIf i had a flat, i'd leave the bugger at the side of the road cos i would'nt have a clue!

If you live in a very "Cold" atmosphere probably every month or so is a good thing to do. In warmer climates you probably could get away with checking every 3 or so months. (You should visibly look at your cars tires frequently (weekly), and if any one of them looks low check it immediately. If it goes low again within a few days have it checked by a "tire" establishment for nail, glass, or abraision damage)

with an accurate gauge, you can check your own tire pressure without taking it to a service place. dial gauges are generally the most accurate. the 'pencil' type are often junk.

manufacturer recommended pressure is not uncommonly *too low*. why? why would the manufacturer recommend not filling the tire to the proper pressure? one word: ride. a softer tire gives a softer ride, and most people find that pleasing. however, it means increased tire wear rates, poorer handling, and poorer gas mileage. so what's the right pressure? there's the rub. 'enthusiasts' use trial and error to find the right/best pressure. but many cars don't really have 'enthusiasts' out there to help them with that. so, you come all the way back full circle - using the manufacturers recommended pressure. oh well. i think two pounds over all around would be safe, and bump up the gas mileage a bit, but of course, IANAL so don't sue me if i'm wrong. i have a performance car, and find that inflating the front six to eight pounds over, and the rear about three or four pounds over gives a terrific boost to handling.

it's best to check tire pressure 'dead cold', ie in the morning before the car's been driven. if the pressures are off, make a note of how much, then when you get to a service station, adjust by that much - rather than to a specific pressure. it's imperfect but far better than filling them to a specific pressure after they've warmed up.

re tyre pressures, in the UK most manufacturers recommend two setting one for urban and the other-higher for motorway use. One of my pet hates most garages when servicing the car change the pressures without checking with you-assuming you don't know what you're doing.. I used to drive a diesel after one service they reduced the pressure to that for a petrol car, first roundabout I came to the bloody thing went straight on. The garage could not understand my anger at the stupidity now I give instructions for them not to touch them. Last time I went to that garage.

Ladies!! cannot change a tyre, disgraceful behaviour. So late at night in either the small fishing village of Salford or the dark lanes of Cornwall you will be trying to flag down a passing nutter to come to your aid. Please learn to do it, lecture over I am now going back into my bunker to await "incoming"
