Book crossing

Consider the idea of releasing a book into the wild, tracing who picks it up, finding out what they thought of it and where they let it escape.

Have any of you done this?

well i have not thought about doing that,but when i was working in the second hand book shop i would sometimes find letters in old books and i would wonder whe had owned the book and how hands had it been through.I love finding things in books but i would always put it back as it belongs with the book it is part of its history

I think Book Crossing is a great thing and I've wanted to do it but I'm so attached to my books that I can barely part with them. I've just recently gotten to the point where I can read them and pass them on to a good friend of mine and that's only because I know she'll take care of them and will appreciate them as much as I did. When I was a kid, books were my way of escaping from a world I didn't fit into or understand too well. Sometimes a book was the only friend I felt I had. I outgrew that but I still feel that attachment to them.

Once, at the top of an elevator at an airport, was a copy of Bhagavad-Gita.

Just sitting where you'd put your left hand before you get on.

Changed my life.

Since then, I often leave books in public places.

That's a neat idea.

I've often mused about why no one has recreated the library of Alexandria though.

They used to confiscate all books brought into Alexandria and make copies of them. They would give the copies to the original owners then keep the books in the library... until it was burned down.

I could handle that. Just living in a library, copying books all day long.
