I believe it's called foot-binding. It was very popular in, I think, China and Japan, other places too, I'm sure. Meant to disable women therefore control them, since they couldn't run, at least not very far. I'm not sure if it's still in practice now, I think in some places it is, but by the look of that woman and by the state of her feet, she's been doing it since she was a very young girl. When foot-binding was a popular practice, it was actually considered "sexy" by the men. It gave women a kind of "sway" I guess. It also made the feet very small, since it curls the toes down, so that the women can fit their feet into very small and delicate shoes. Take a look at the size of the shoe she's wearing on the other foot. It's incredibly deforming and terrible, as anyone can obviously see from the pic. Very sad too. Makes my heart break that women were, and still are, treated that way in some places. :-1
Pisses me off too.

The ideal foot size was three inches. This was called the "Golden Lotus." A four inch foot was okay but not as desirable and was known as the "Silver Lotus." The feet were supposed to resemble the shape of lotus blossoms.
According to books I've read on this the cleft where heel meets arch and it folds was supposed to be..(trying to be delicate).. another sexual...outlet. Use your imagination there.
Also the disgusting aroma of the basically dead and rotted feet was supposed to be considered erotic.
While this practice did make women into cripples, it was also a sign of prestige for both the woman and her family. A small foot was almost like a dowry of sorts and could help secure a rich husband and a footbound woman would most surely have to marry into wealth because she couldn't very well work for her living and wouldn't be useful in the fields.
The other reason this process was desirable is because it crippled a woman's power and therefore she would be no threat to men.
Chinese peasant girls were not subjected to footbinding because they were needed to work the fields.
The woman's feet were first bound around age 4 or 6 or so and the procedure often consisted of the girl's mother purposely breaking the girl's arches then breaking the toes, folding them under and wrapping them with long strips of silk or cotton. Some of the toes would rot and fall off. The wrappings were changed about every 2 days and alum was put on the broken feet and then they were rewrapped. This binding process continued for about ten years.
In the 1600s, the Manchus took over the Ying Dynasty, creating the Qing Empire and made footbinding illegal but people continued it anyway because they still considered it attractive.
In 1911, footbinding ceased for good except for certain women who lived in the countryside.
Women were ordered to unbind their feet but this caused them immense pain, even more than the constant pain of being bound, because they had no support without the wrappings, so many continued to wrap their feet anyway.
There are still some very old Chinese women who are footbound and require the special lotus shoes and there is only one company who continues to make them just for these women.
I saw some of these lotus shoes at an exhibit one time and my boyfriend had to keep dragging me away. I was fascinated with them. I think it's utterly disgusting that women would do that to their daughters just because men found it attractive and I can't fathom how a person's foot could fit into such a little thing- they're the size of baby shoes, just about.

There are many current fads women will try for "beauty" here in the US or in other so-called civilized countries.
It seems extremely medieval to me to break the perfectly functional nose on your face and reconstruct it so it can be daintier or whatever the hell.
How about inflating your breasts with foreign substances?
Botox anyone?
Collagen taken from cadavers to inject into your lips?
Sucking the fat from you ass through a tube?
What about the new rage in vaginal plastic surgery so it's more pleasing to the eye?
How about even the small things we do... plucking out individual strands of hair so our eyebrows are more perfect.
Walking day in and day out in high heels.
Corsets.
Push up bras.
Tummy-flattening pantyhose.
Regardless of how "evolved" and "liberated" we think we are, all we've done is invented new methods of torture in the name of aesthetic values. The media tells us that we need to break and smash our bodies to bits and then piece them back together again so we look better and fit into an ideal. WHO'S ideal? In the grand scheme of all of the things women have done to their bodies in the name of beauty, is footbinding really all that odd?
